This place is a 90 year old hotel and it wears it well. It's elevator is a clicketly-clack apparatus with a scissor gate-that you have to hold the floor number for a couple of seconds to roll- did I feel safe using it? Yes. Did I think it added to the ambiance? Absolutely. The hotel obviously has had infrastructure,safety and comfort improvements

The Abigail hotel was comparatively inexpensive, basic accommodation but
quirky and my room was clean and provided a comfortable bed, clean linen
and towels, a bay window overlooking the Museum of Asian Art and a
compact bathroom. Loved the lift!

Location is central a little the wrong side of town but this is why it is cheap I thnk if you can go along with the crazies around its fine. Beautiful hotel well above its class rating with lovely staff - Hotel Whitcomb was clean, very pleasant. Room had beautiful decorations, bathroom and the whole experience was excellent. I stayed in this hotel for 4 nights in mid November. I have seen people raise there eyebrows when they learn this hotel is situated in Tenderloin area (which is considered a bit shady area). The front desk person was friendly. I like that you have to be buzzed in and I like that everyone who enters the hotel has to pass the front desk. Also for longer stays they have laundry facilities. -
