The hel[pfulness of the staff and the good food. nice surroundingd and comfortable. Very friendly staff and clean confortable room.Bit on smaller side (but I guess this would be due to age of building 14th century) .Very good modern facilities. The personal touch, very warm and open greeting. staff very helpful. choice of venues to eat. I need good weather conditon and good washing (cold and warm)in Bath.

Central aspect of the hotel, pleasant staff and the facilities.Comfortable beds, well furnished rooms, friendly atmosphere. The staff were very cooperative and helpful. A roaring log fire in the bar/restaurant area. Plenty of parking space. Comfortable bed. Loads of character, quiet location. Room in older part of hotel with excellent, newly retiled and refitted bathroom.The brasserie supper was good. The hotel had good character. The actual location was good to the centre of Colchester. We checked out very early and did not realise it was not a 24 hour reception desk so had to wake somebody to get out.There was a lot of outside noise due to the roadworks nearby and all night track maintainance on local rail track. The late night party noise on two nights but this could easily be a plus for party goers as well!!. Check-out at 11am is too early. Lighting in the bathroom was extremely poor as their was no light in the fitting over the basin altho the razor socket in same worked.The old wing has such low ceilings that I had to walk in a stooped manner to avoid banging my head on the beams. My room would have benefited from shower facilities (longer/higher shower hose/head and a curtain). A few items in the room where not supplied as indicated, such as an extra blanket and a current TV film guide. Rather difficult to locate even though in central Colchester.Too much road noise. Bedroom was rather dreary and needed re-decoration. Restaurant closed except for breakfast during our stay.The floor of the room overhead creaked (even more than my C18th house!) ; not easy to sleep when people overhead were moving. Yes.... I booked a double room for one and they gave me a single. Not what I wanted !!!!!!!!. Room was an old room with a lick of paint called a refubishment, bed was old springs sticking outside which cut my leg. No ventilation in room, unable to open windo, fan broke, damp on walls and a broken phone co could not call reception to complain. But i did that in the morning in person.

From London: Take junction 28 off the m25 onto the a12 (e). Then take the Colchester Central exit onto the a133. Straight over the next two roundabouts leading onto Cowdray Avenue. At the double roundabout take a right at the first roundabout and then straight across at the second roundabout. The entrance to the hotel is a few hundred metres down on the left. From Ipswich: From a12 take exit for Colchester North onto a1232; follow the Ipswich road for approximately 2 - 3 miles, until you approach a double roundabout. Straight over both roundabouts following the Ipswich road. The entrance to the hotel is a few hundred meters down on the left. By rail: Just a 3/4 hr ride by intercity train from London's Liverpool Street Station. Colchester is well served by two local railway stations: Colchester Town (St. Botolphs) and Colchester North. By air: Stansted International Airport, off the a12, is approximately 40 miles away.
