The last reviewer must have been in a different hotel from us. We thought the hotel was lovely. It exceeded our expectations. Yannis met us the near the harbour and took our luggage to the hotel where he gave us a very welcome cold drink. The other staff were very nice. Our room, Artimis, was on the second floor (Yannis carried my suitcase up the stairs) and had a view over the roofs of the old town and up to the Fort. One thing this hotel can pride itself is its staff. Everybody from the Reception desk to the maids are polite, helpful, welcoming, hard working, smiling. Even though they may be busy they will always spend and extra minute to speak to you, ask you about your day. My favourite was the mairte d' of the hotel. The hotel is located 10 min walking from the old town, 2 min walking from the beach. This is an Apart hotel so you have an extra room with a lounge area a kitchenette to cook in if you wish a - Peter

we have just got back from a 2week stay at the astali hotel and from the moment we arrived to the moment we left the family who own it were amazing.the hotel itself is very clean and tidy.you have your room cleaned every day and the maid puts your nightwear on the bed in the shape of a bow very nice,the family who own the hotel are amazing very friendly and make your stay much more enjoyable,by the time you leave they are like your friends.the breakfast in the hotel is really nice as well and yo - Katie

The room we stayed was huge, nicely decorated with taste and high quality. The hotel as a whole is clean and well lit (not bright, well lit). The breakfast which was also more than enough, but normal for Greek standards was served in the alley in fron of the hotel on nice wooden tables. Staff are nice and helpful. The location is excellent, although they do not have a parking space, the port parking lot is 2 minutes walk, and if you can park anywhere else for free, just do it. I don't know what - John

I really loved this place! I really felt at home during this one week holidays in Casa Vitae in Rethimno!!!!! The hotel is marvelous and the people there always ready to help and offer their best of hospitality!! Not to mention the super-duper breakfast at the beautiful renaissance yard, surrounded by flowers of all kinds !!! Travelling around Crete by car gives you the freedom to see what you want when you want, except when you're in one of the main cities searching for parking! For this the Fortezza Hotel gives you a break by offering free parking across the street. Strangely enough, you need to inform the front desk to open the gate before you can park (luckily we were able to find street parking first). It would be impossible to find a Hotel with friendlier more helpful staff, nothing was too much trouble and everybody made us feel special and very welcome. We had no complaints about cleanliness whatsoever, everywhere was spotless and we went at the end of their season. The food was exceptional, there was so much choice at every meal and everything beautifully cooked and presented. Special theme days were also very enjoyable. This is a brilliant hotel to stay at because it makes you feel at home. The staff are very friendly and sometimes like to have chats with you. So far on the trip we have been on this has been the best hotel. The rooms are great, good sized, nice comfortable beds,airconditioning, great views of the beach and it is right on the beach. It is just a five minute walk to the old town. If the water has a rip or is dangerous they will warn you in a friendly way. - Shirley

Great holiday for partner, baby and my parents. When we booked we asked for 2 rooms on the ground floor near each other, when we arrived at our rooms we had 2 on the 2nd floor and they were duplex suites over 2 floors. We returned to reception and were given 2 suites on the ground floor next to the pool. We were impressed with the way this was dealt with. I agree on previous reviews this is not a 5 star hotel as you would expect, more a 4 star. We did find the facilities within the room very - Christopher
