A beautiful old building with a pretty restaurant. Bedrooms in newerwing so modern and clean. Excellent breakfast - loads of choice. Veryattentive waiting staff. Quick and efficient check in/out despite itbeing busy. Quiet bedroom overlooking fields. Wedding party going on butwe couldn't hear anything. Loved the spa - used the pool, sauna andsteam room. We will definitely stay there again. The young Asian receptionist who was on the ball and was caring and responsive in dealing with us arriving and during our stay. An example to others.
all reviews » We liked everything about the stay at the Thistle St Albans. Room Comfortable, good location. the gym/swimming area. The fact they double booked and we got anight free. The staff were very accomodating. Nice swimming pool and facilities. Very nice hotel and enjoyed the tickets to Whipsnade zoo. It was clean, rooms were a good size, in a good location. ease of access from main routes. The staff were excellent and the food was good too! The facilities onsite are great. Just its convenience for visiting family in North London. The staff were really helpful in reearranging / finding a room for us when they were very busy. The also gave us compimentary breakfast and a discount for the inconvenience. The bedroom. convenient and lots of parking. Use of swimming pool. The health spa and bar/restaurant. Absolutely nothing, overpriced rates for below-par accommodation.The layout of the hotel means it is quite a trek to the bedroom. Thisdid not bother us at all as we enjoyed seeking new routes, but may be aproblem for someone with mobility problems or lots of luggage to carry. Late breakfasters had less than hot or fresh coffee and teaBeing given early morning calls at the door when they had not been requested. No hotel staff esp the new manager was very good and helpful. The walls were quite thin. I could hear alot of things going onnext door.As the breakfast was buffet and left on the buffet cart it was not very hot at all. bed was firmer than i am used to. The room smelt of smoke, the windows haven't been cleaned in years. Infact the whole room needed a scrub. More like a 3 star than 4. We were given a standard room with a tiny window looking into a service courtyard - until we pointed out that our reservation was for an 'Executive' room, to which we were immediately transferred. The main course of the Christmas lunch in the hotel restaurant was very disappointing.The room we were given was not the of the highest quality, as they were very busy, but under the circumstances they did well to find us a double room at all. The restaurant and waiting staff who were hopeless. The food was awful.cost of a fairly a modest room is high. No hot water and bathroom in need of repare not expected from a 4*. The restaurant was not open on ondays and this wasnt clear on bookingOnly 1 set of towels in room. I am afraid I have made a complaint about the hotel on several points. The hotel was advertised as 'fully refurbished', however we got thesame dull and stale room we had the last time we stayed at the Thistle.It was supposed to be non-smoking, however the room had a constantsmell of stale cigarette smoke - rather like an old pub. Unfortunatelywe didn't get chance to complain until later in the evening as we wereout all day. On arrival my reservation was not found, has to re-register all over aNo hot water, it was tepid not good enough after a long days travelling and you want a hot relaxing bath. No towels provided had to request twice. Breakfast was ordered the previous evening yet it was incorrect on arrival, not worth the price paid. The staff were robots not the slightest bit interested in my complaints.Everything was bad, rooms dirty, rooms to hot, room service poor, staff unhelpful and miserable looking, no vegitarian dishes, harldly any drink at the bar.
