Established in 1892 by the French-Ottoman architect Alexander Vallaury, the Pera Palace is a special category museum hotel designed in neoclassical, art nouveau and oriental styles. The classic French patisserie Patisserie de Pera serves delicious Turkish and French-inspired handmade cakes, macaroons, gateaux and homemade chocolates. Pera SPA by Spa Soul has a hammam with a classic heated marble platform and foam bath. Guests can enjoy the steam bath, hot tub, sauna and a fully equipped gym. The indoor jet-streamed swimming pool offers the healing power of water both in summer and winter. The lively streets of Istiklal Avenue are just 250 metres from the hotel. Restaurants, clubs, artist ateliers, galleries and museums are only a few steps away. The hotel is within walking distance of Taksim Square, 3 km from the touristic district of old city, 2 km from cruiseline harbour and only 20 km from Atatürk International Airport. The history: Agatha Christie wrote her [Murder on the Orient Express] at this hotel. There is a small exhibition area on the fourth floor about this and other historic moments. The elevator from 1895 can still run (though not always in use). They sell postcards and other souvenirs about the hotel at the front desk. Really a piece of history! The concierge Evren is superb, recommending us of fantastic restaurants (usually nearby, as the location is great) and tours and activities. The Breakfast .

A classic hotel, which I've used twice before, in 1995 & 2005, before its recent refurbishment. It's now three times the price, but the grandeur is no longer faded, it's now a true 5-star place. And I'm delighted to say that the refurb hasn't spoilt its character at all, as this is a hotel with more character and history than most! Staff were great, we got a room upgrade, and an extra hour extended checkout wasn't a problem. If we return to Istanbul, it'll be the Pera Palas for us!. We loved the historical ambience of the hotel and it was a delight to look at and wander around. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and it does not feel like a 'big' hotel. The room had everything to be expected of for an upmarket leisure trip or business stay. And like other reviewers we did enjoy the hammam style bathroom/shower!. The location is great , walking distance to istiklal st.(touristic action st.at taksim) .pleanty nearby restaurants and cafe'S. The hotel is extremely clean , furniture is new and high class luxury standard, historic hotel . Agatha restaurant also high quality . Staff are friendly and cooperative . It's really worth the money you pay. From the moment we arrived at the hotel, we were warmly welcomed and looked after. Our room overlooking the Golden Horn was very well decorated and fitted out, and generally the hotel was spotless. The location was absolutely perfect (equidistant from Taksim Square and Galata Bridge). Altogether, a great experience. I liked just about everything at the Pera Palace. The room and bathroom are not very big. There's no roof top bar/restaurant of the restaurant. But there're plenty of options nearby. Nothing - although the bathroom floor did get a bit hot at times - mitigated by the slippers provided. Nothing at all. Spa was very good, but quite pricey for the treatments. We didnt book breakfast, because it was priced at US$50 per person, which seemed a bit excessive, even for a hotel as nice as the Pera Palace. I was upgraded to a room with a view. Normally there is a charge of Euro 40 for a sea view however the view from my room which was a little disappointing. It maybe an idea to check the view before you pay the extra charge. The restaurant is downstairs and is dim and unfriendly. Why on earth they did not have that on the ground floor with the bar and the terrace I dont know. Made both floors feel very dead. Quite sedate and quiet place - almost too much so. Needs a bit of life. Breakfast was very expensive. We assumed the bathroom would be Hammam style as per our last stay, but shower was inside a hip bath. Nothing. Price of breakfast was pure robbery. 33 euros per person for breakfast. The hamam was out of service, steam bath was dirty, whirlpool was not working. Tight room and bathroom for the luxury hotel. Outside noise at night time: loud music from nearby cafes/restaurants well into the night. Breakfast was expensive for what you get. Ours was 178 Turkish lira which is about $90 us. Basic breakfast, no alcohol. Breakfast too expensive for what it is and rooms design v. old fashion.
