Great value for money. The apartment was quirky, spacious and well set out. It is not in a fancy tourist area but is well situated and within walking distance to the Grand Bazaar, Blue Mosque, Topkapi Palace etc. We loved the experience of 'living amongst the locals'. The landlady, Mrs Guhl, who lives across the road, was friendly and hospitable in spite of not being able to speak much English. After a big day of exploring, she laid out a carpet in the street and we sat in the street at 9pm dr.
all reviews » The road where Ascot House is located is not properly a touristic place but you feel to stay in the true Instanbul. I stayed in Penthouse which is located at top floor: it was a little small for five people but the view from the open balcony on the Blue Mosque and the sea was superb and have the dinner on the balcony has been fantastic. The apartment was comfortable, reasonably spacious, clean and well appointed although kitchenware was limited. Ascot House was really convenient for old Istanbul and local eateries, and close to public transport to travel into "new" Istanbul and further afield. Great location in case u dont mind to walk uphill and downhill all the time. ;) The street view with all the shoe-makers is just stunning!!! Good facilities, nice terrace/garden and balcony if you choose the 1st two floors. The standard of decor in our unit was very high and I could see the owners had tried to achieve a theme of ottoman luxury. Only a short walk to the grand bazaar and the blue mosque. Right in the heart of the old city. Only a few minutes walk from the Blue Mosque. Good aircon in the height of summer. Nice building, great views. I really enjoy the kindness of the hostess, the location and the room for a family of 5 people. Close to sites Very roomy Clean. The apartment, although clean and spacious, was a little shabby with cracked glass in the coffee table, broken vase, missing cutlery, odd crockery etc. The contacts with the owners are very limited and mainly by mail. I had an issue with a window and asked to send someone to repair it but nothing happened during the period I stayed there. The road and district around Ascot House was run-down and unattractive with waste (cleared daily) and a little smell and noise from the local shoemakers - but it gave the area character. The contact for Ascot House was very friendly but spoke no English: that didn't matter for us as we had no problems. The streets are very steap, but thats life ;)))). The area/ street location is in a very poor area and the street was dirty and full of stray cats. I found the area a bit confronting and did not feel comfortable walking around with out my husband. Only one pan made self catering difficult. A second set of keys would have been useful. Transfer from the airport late in the evening useful but pricey. The street would gain to be a bit cleaner. In busy area, kind of loud Very big hill to climb to get to sites Hard for taxi to find. getting a cab to the door was not possible, but found it difficult to watch an older woman carry one of my bags. Also didn't like that my bedroom was on a 2nd floor and I could not block out the light. Could have used instructions on how the TV worked. The stairs were very creeky and loud. One night the people in the apartment above us were moving around a lot.This made our chandelier 'clink' the ceiling above us creek too. We were unable to sleep that night. It is very hard to fund English speaking person there. The area is very dearty. House itself lovely old and good. Approach ,, very stiff slop. Chance fall down.
