Firstly the location is great. You are right at the start of the cable car which you can take over to fisherman's wharf. Room had been updated sympathetically and although not large by US standards, you could definately swing a cat if that was your thing. The free WiFi was good and great for keeping in touch with home and getting those early morning emails off. Don't try and video skype later in the day though.

For a solo traveller the opportunity to say hi to other guests and have some company at the end of a business day makes me a repeat visitor from NZ. The location of this hotel is THE BEST. You can't get better. RIght in the heart of San Francisco and seconds from Union Square. Boutique style hotel. Very charming...lovely continental breakfast that is complimentary and a very nice staff. the General Manager is a very caring and nice gentleman. Very happy with the location right by the cable car turntables and close to bart. It's always great to have a coffeemaker in the room and a free continental breakfast as well. The staff was very helpful and went out of their way to help us located something we accidentally left behind in the room. the staff were great. Really went out of their way to be welcoming. The little things they did made the difference between average and great. It was so nice to arrive and to be immediately offered a drink at happy hour and to be able to join other travellers particularly when so far from home. The location is great. Close to Bart, Union Square, shopping, restaurants, makes it a great spot to stay while in the city. Staff is very gracious and accommodating. We stayed on the Powell side and it does get a bit noisy from about midnight until 2 when the bars close. Facilities were very clean. They had an all inclusive happy hour with snacks and beer and wine at no extra charge. Rooms were very clean, especially the bathroom. The staff was fantastic, very responsive. The room had been updated but the building is very old so some paint was peeling a bit on the old plaster walls but the charm of being in an old San Francisco building it worth things like that to us. Furnishings and the room was a bit dated. There was nothing that I was dissatisfied with. window did not open and I know because of washing windows scheduled next day. Older hotel, but redone nicely. Rooms can be noisy at night, especially facing the street car. Could not control heat in the room, though blankets worked when sleeping. Rooms were small. We didn't have an independent thermostat but I opened the window and it cooled off quickly. Funny that there was no AC in the room. The room was quite small, like 3x3m, without a table or chair. The girl who was in charge of breakfast was rude, there were no pastries left and when a customer asked she said they had to wait, even though she had a big box of pastries. The overnight front desk clerk ignored my boyfriend when he was tying to get into the hotel after going to get us some food late at night, my boyfriend forgot his key and waited 30 min out in the cold. My friend came by to pick us up early in the morning and the same staff ignored him as he rang the buzzer to get in. Street noise is a problem as the old windows have no secondary glazing. I didn't like the selection for the free breakfast. It was just juice and pastries. It was too simple and surprisingly disappointing. I personally would have liked scrambled eggs and some bread and butter. Old rooms - needs some updating especially the shower/tub and carpet. Breakfast ends too early (at 9am) and needs some additional items. I can't eat bread and that's all there was besides coffee, tea and juice. small and old, but very common style in San Francisco. gnats in the room, slight smell of mold. Breakfast was a little sparse. For someone with Gluten issues there was nothing I could eat. Rooms are too small and the furniture worn out.The carpet was not very clean looking. the lack of preferred parking for handicap guest and the fact that it was a corner room on the 5th floor. Parking was a real negitave. The website needs to say what size dog they accept before taking reservations. The staff was accommodating but didn't seem like they wanted to be. The hotel could do with a revamp rooms are pretty old looking, no air con so had to open windows so all you could hear was traffic. Price, its too expensive for such standard, breakfast is poor - only coffee, oj and muffins. Its even less than continental breakfast. Noice from the street is huge but its more american buildind standard (simple windows, no acustic isolation on the walls). Room (229) was small and almost claustrophobic. Website touts breakfast. However, it is a light continental breakfast. Breakfast ran out and we had to go out for breakfast. Sheets felt old and worn. The hotel is rather dated and does need a good overhaul. For such a central hotel in a prime location the facilities could be a lot better. The breakfast and no safe in d room. Safes are located on the lobby. Quite surprised that they messed up my booking and my first night booking were given to someone else and they already full booked. However, to my surprise, they compensate us by giving a free night stay at Fusion hotel not far away from there. That will do :). First night's accommodation had to be relocated to alternative hotel as double booked. Breakfast is disappointing - better off with none than what was offered. No air conditioning! Hot enough to need it but event it weren't to have fresh air you had to put up with street noise all night (including screaming and sirens). Old hotel - thin walls, small room & bath, grungy appearance. All amenities - carpet, furniture, etc need to be updated. Continental breakfast pastry and coffee only. 'Free Breakfast' was a joke, almost no choice (basically danish and mini muffins and short on supply), not enough space for the guests to sit or stand, and the coffee was terrible. I didn't like that there was no A/C unit in the room. It was very muggy at night- I had to open a window to air the room out but the hotel is right next to the trolley, so it was extremely loud outside. People kept screaming and talking very loud. I did not get good sleep at all. I'd definitely sell earplugs. I walked a mile to 7 different stores In the middle of the night- and none of them had earplugs. The bathroom appeared old and outdated. Rooms are tired - need majopr overhaul. Bathroom fine. There is nowhere in rooms to store valuables. The chair that goes with the desk is not appropriate and is too low to work at the table without a pillow. Old looking, cozy room, and very small bed for the price I paid. Parking, no room to pull curbside in front of hotel for valet at a cost of nearly $40 per day..walls and window in room VERY thin, can hear everything inside and out. Room was at end of hall, street noise was very loud. room was hot at night, opened window but noise was too much.Room condition was just ok. Breakfast, cleanness, smell, and tv resolution was down. No hot water,no heater. shower (poor water pressure, low shower head), airconditioning unit, slow check-in. Killed a huge cockroach in the room. Kind of a turn off. The staff did not seem too concerned.
