I was attending a conference at NYU. The hotel is right at the heart of NYU and so was a convenient location for me. The beautiful Washington Square Park is just steps away from the hotel. I like that the hotel is situated in a safer and quieter part of the city, yet within easy reach of the attractions in the city. Importantly, the friendly and helpful staff made my stay memorable. They were knowledgeable and prompt in responding to requests, as well as generous with recommendations for places.
all reviews » My sister and I traveled to NYC for an event at NYU. I loved the location being at Washington Square. We walked to dinner each night at small ethnic restaurants. The free breakfast was a great addition- coffee was very good. Loved the look and style of the hotel. Staff was amazing and VERY accommodating. After traveling to NYC for years and staying in Midtown - this was so much more fun and the room was the quietest I have ever had and the bed was comfortable. Cant wait to go back to the villag. Very well run hotel and in a "quiet" (for New York) location near Washington Square but a reasonably "doable" walk or a taxi ride away to main attractions. Reasonable breakfast included in room rate. Very helpful doorman (Ronnie) gave good travel and activity tips (ie "take the High Line to the Empire State") The Square is leafy and pleasant and family friendly during the day and there were musicians and childrens activities at the weekend. Some good eating and drinking options in the area. Location. We were visiting nyu and we were essentially on the campus. We walked everywhere. The park was at our doorstep. Lots of restaurants nearby. The staff were friendly and very accomodating. We arrived at 8:30 am and asked to store our bags until check in. The desk manager let us check in and go right to our room which was ready and waiting. We were also able to park on the street in front of the hotel for the entire weekend, thus saving at least $70.00 in parking fees. This is our 5th time staying at wsh. Our first time was 30 years ago, at which time we fell in love with the place. Since then, we have visited nyc and stayed in several other locations, but no location or hotel has ever been as "right" for us as wsh. It is one of the few places that we continue to enjoy as much in our 60s as we did in our 30s. We frequently travel to Europe, and wsh is closer to being in a European hotel than any American hotel I've ever visited. Loved the free parking on the street, great continental breakfast included as well as a keurig coffee maker in the room! Rooms were clean and comfortable. Staff was attentive, the concierge found us the free parking. A real find in a cute neighborhood! Babbo Natale's signature restaurant is across the street! We waited in line at 4:45 and got a table. Fantastic food and experience. They save a few tables in front and bar seats for people who wait in line. Location is superb. Right opposite Washington Square Park, a place to unwind, chill-out, people watch and be entertained by street performers. An intimate and attractive neighbourhood,(a world apart from the crazy in-your-face Times Square) strewn with cafés, restaurants and shops. Close to the equally attractive West Village, Meatpacking district and the waters of The Hudson River. To cap it all the nearest subway station is a mere 2 min walk away!. Fantastic location especially if you seek a younger, trendier environment. A great choice if you have older kids. The staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. It is clean and quiet. The inclusive continental breakfast was a real bonus and while not "gourmet" it was acceptable. This is not a "cookie cutter" hotel but a place of charm and atmosphere right in the heart of one of NYC's most iconic neighborhoods. It is for travelers not tourists. The location was awesome for visiting NYU. Nothing like a walk through Washington Square Park any time/any weather. Is was easily within walking distance to Noho/Soho/West Village. Major subway station 1 blk. away. Quality restaurants are abundant. The included breakfast came in handy as we are early risers but whom we were visiting are late brunchers. Staff was very helpful and extremely pleasant. Decor was very interesting/lovely. The hotel has a great history. We enjoyed the hotel and, most of all, the surrounding neighborhood. The staff was nice. The room was fairly clean (there were a few stray hairs on the bathroom wall). The room had coffee, tea, an iron, hair dryer, and necessary toiletries. Everything we needed. The room was actually larger than we expected. The bed was firm but comfortable. Staff very friendly. Concierge was a great resource for what subway lines to take, where the local jazz clubs were, where other places were nearby, directions to the Lincoln tunnel on the way out -- in short, anything we needed to know. The hotel is located in a quiet place in the village, which is a noce change after spending time uptown. The hotel is rather old and very comfortable. The rooms are not spacious but have been modernized in a very tasteful manner. The staff is helpful and sincerely pleasant, making us feel at home and relaxed. The location is within walking distance of all levels of restaurants, parks, and cafes. The buffet breakfast was excellent but the room in which it's taken is claustrophobic, dimly lit and just too hot. Our room was small but efficiently arranged so it actually functioned well. Honestly, there were no negatives. They can't control the weather and it rained one day!. The room and hotel was fairly basic for the price, but it is New York and really the only hotel in this area. There isn't really anything not to like. If you want to watch tv seriously (which we wouldn't bother with on vacation), the screen was a bit small.The room was a bit small, but then the hotel dates to 1902, and we did not spend anytime there anyway except to sleep. If you have mobility difficulties there are 4 steps into the hotel although they have apprtable ramp and 2 sets of steps to the restaurant/breakfast room. it may be possible there is other access to this but we didnt enquire. Rooms are on the small side and bathroom is too but that's typical in New York and wasn't a problem as we are both slim!. Parking was a bit of a hassle, but we ended up putting our car in a local garage during the day for $20 and parked on the street overnight for free. Tiny hanging space in closet. For light sleepers be aware that traffic noise at night could be a problem if in a front facing room. Nothing - it was the perfect base for a four-day visit to New York. Rooms are dated but serve a purpose. Didn't like the following: 1) Noisy aircon. Not really anything. absence of fresh fruit for continental breakfast. N/A. A May visit found the hotel to be much more crowded - tables during breakfast were never cleared and it was rather dirty. The room was clean though. Staff nice but not as nice as previous visits. Wished it was under $300 as it was a last minute special rate wished the continental breakfast had hard boiled eggs. First night, we stayed in a double-bed room, the bed is not okay for two persons though. By new York standards not the smallest room I have stayed in..but pretty close. Bathroom size was adequate for 1 person at a time. Restaurant staff seemed Rather overwhelmed. Perhaps they are short staffed?. I thought it was to expensive and I think we paid over the odds. Breakfast service is a bit down-market when compared to the other aspects of the hotel. The beds were tiny and rolled. It would be nice to be able to keep the beds from rolling. Nothing- if I HAD to make a criticism, it would be that the rooms are on the small side but not so small that it is a problem. Breakfast a bit limited. There was considerable noise from the street below at night. It was a bit noisier than in past times One day it was almost 3:30 p.m. and my room had not yet been cleaned bathrooms are small towels are not plush. It was a bit too hot in the room but they did have an AC unit but just didn't think I would need it in November. Wish they had more than one running machine and one bicycle in the gym. No food or drink available after 11 unless you order in. One or two of the staff were a bit dismissive, particularly in the restaurant. A shame the upstairs bar wasn't open on some evenings. No place for your clothes or your empty suitcases. No tag to hang at the door and let the cleaning staff know NOT TO KNOCK RUDELY AND IMMEDIATELY OPEN THE DOOR AND BREAK RIGHT IN!!!.
