My partner and I stay at The New Otani Kaimana for 2 nights early April 2013. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. When we checked in the lady was really friendly and we were upgraded to an ocean view room free of charge which was great. It was last two nights of our 17 night stay around the various islands so decided to pay a bit more than we had budgeted for, but it was well worth it. all reviews » This boutique hotel is "just right". Not too big, not too small, not too fancy, not too plain: relaxed, casual elegance. The food is excellent. Most of the staff have been there for years. The hotel is at the far end of Waikiki Beach, next to the Nanitorium, across from Kapiolani Park and close to Diamond Head--in short, away from the madness of Waikiki but within walking distance. We arrived off a Cruise and after picking up car rental at airport, we were able to check-in early at 11:00 which was surely appreciated - then headed off to explore the island. Valet parking was super and all staff were very helpful. Coffee maker delivered to our room upon request. Right on beach and a 15 minute walk to the Waikiki beach shops and restaurants. The location was just what we were looking for, beach side away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki Beach but close enough to walk within 10 mins. The manager was able to upgrade our room to accommodate our reservation since the letsbookhotel.com reservation had not been received at the hotel. We loved that it was a smaller hotel and that it was situated away from the main area of Waikiki. We could easily walk into the main area, but we enjoyed your location. The hotel was simple, yet elegant and not overdone. Your beach area is wonderful and the Lanai restaurant lovely. Location - the Diamond Head neighborhood. The wonderful Kaimana Beach. Swimming to the wind sock. Balcony, views of city, valleys, ocean. Not at all stuffy or pretentious. Relaxed environment. Helpful, friendly staff. I feel so good when I stay here. (this was my 4th time). The location is amazing, right on the beach (which is the best in the Waikiki area), great views of the sea, Diamond Head and the mountains. The property though old, is in good shape with a fantastic Japanese restaurant and the beachside restaurant as well. The views are spectacular from either the Diamond head view or the Beach view rooms. Place is modern and clean. Beautiful beach tight in front of the hotel. Across the street is a beautiful park. Short walk to one of the nicest Elks lodges I have visited. The staff went away beyond being polite - they were all so friendly and one got the idea that it was genuine.I hate to pick out one individual but Ron should be in public relations. He was competent, helpful and a great sense of humour. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The food is good. I really like the white low bath tub. It was very easy for me to get in and out. I have been coming for several years and will continue to return. Location, service, luxury. I visit my daughter in Honolulu twice a year and will always include a couple of days at the New Otani. I love the relaxed vibe and Kaimana Beach right outside the hotel. Liked how close it was to the beach. Staff were very friendly and happy to accommodate where they could. A balcony to sit on at our room and watch the sunset. We are Hawaiian Airlines Miles, but was not mentioned, so we didn't ask about points. Service was great and ver courteous. Clean units, friendly staff. location and staff. The hotel is located down the far end of Waikiki beach. It was much quiter than being on the center of the beach. We walked up to diamond head from our hotel which was really nice. Position: walking distance to Waikiki (c.10 mins) but very quiet area. the staff was accommodating and the restaurants were lovely. liked the location and the desk staff. Small and on beach. All good. The hotel did not have the letsbookhotel.com reservations when we arrived at check-in. Thankfully I had a print of the reservation confirmation for them to honor our reservation. I really tried to think of something, but I couldn't. The distance to other shops, restaurants, although the walk was really pleasant in the daytime it's at least 15-20 minutes to the main Waikik area. Do not come here wihout a car. The restayrant is good but pricey, and it is a $20 cab ride to the main part of Waikiki. There is bus service, but we did not use it, so I cannot comment. If you do come with a car, parking is limited, valet only. Since I did not make my needs clear, I found the cost of the room rather unnecessarily high. While the view was great, I did not expect a $300 room. When I book for my next visit, I will make my expectations very clear. Since I don't spend much time in the room, a view is not really necessary to me. There error was mine not the hotel'S. Access with our heavy bags to our room was very limited. No close by eateries. /Reservations at first tried to put us into an older part of the hotel which was detached and had no elevator and told us this was an upgrade. Even the bellmen didn't want to take our bags to this room. We are seniors, we did ask to be moved back to our room without the stated upgrade. Rooms require update. AC over bed uncomfortable. At times the staff had a hard time understanding our needs. I asked what the menu specialized in and if a reservation was needed for supper and the young woman seemed to be confused with my question. No pool. Not easy/obvious how to get to the beach from within the hotel. Evening turndown service always knocked when we were getting ready for dinner. It was over at 7:00PM. We missed it most nights which was fine, but their timing is terrible. Also hotel Wi-Fi is VERY SLOW. The lack of free access to computer and printer, lack of supplies such as bottled water, snacks etc. in the room and the outrageous price where available, 4$ for a SMALL bottle of water?????. Couple in next room smoking in a smoking free hotel, should have been picked up on by staff and we also complained, plus they had loud music on balcony every night. Very small. Construction was going on in both rooms beside us. We were not informed until after we checked in, then were informed by a letter left on the counter. very small room. Valet parking very expensive (c.$25 per day), there is plenty of parkings available near the hotel. Walking back from Waikiki to the hotel at night, park is full of homeless (we had no issues though). Thought the structure is pretty old-style compared to the price paid. the room was very small, the bed was uncomfortable, no space in the bathroom. we would not return for this reason. the rooms and hotel lobby are looking tired and need updating. The Hau Tree Staff need training in how to be polite and not throw your meal down on the table. Very little finesse in the dining department. Rooms small and old.
