What people say
the hotel was superb, the room was very much a 'country house' style and was one of the nicest hotel rooms that I have stayed in. The breakfast was freshly cooked using local produce and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Our only regret was that we didn't have the opportunity to sample the restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed our weekend. Our room was really gorgeous, comfortable, warm and cosy. The food was exceptional. The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel has been very tastefully decorated, the whole stay was absolutely brilliant!. all reviews »
Everything. It was easy to relax, the staff were very professional in leaving us alone to relax but always being there if needed. Food was lovely as well. Very nice relaxing break. The house was beautiful and very tastefully furnished. The staff were all very attentive and helpful. felt relaxed as soon as walked in the door. no bar but just ordered drinks at the little reception then sat in big leather chair by fire. wonderful Italian food. Couldn't have felt more welcome. Definately going back.Stayed in the Oke Tor room. A lovely hotel in a lovely setting. Breakfast was excellent. The room itself was lovely, the bathroom excellent. The helpful staff and owner. The fact that the hotel was owner/managed. The quiet of the hotel and surrounding area. Spacious lounge and breakfast rooms. Lighting in bedroom was also very good.Excellent room, very spacious and clean with excellent bathroom facilities. Beautiful rooms, lovely lounge with open fire to sit in after dinner. The recently renovated rooms and the food. Staff all very pleasant and welcoming. Room was well furnished and decorated and impeccably clean. The cooked breakfast was delicious and the location of the hotel was ideal for access to Dartmoor and other local attractions such as the Lydford Gorge. The roaring log fire in the sitting room was an added bonus.Location was very good, great for easy walks to dartmoor and access to village. The rooms were well presented, clean and comfortable with good facilities. Fantastic local pubs in the area. The peace and tranquility and friendly staff. We were only using it between visits torelatives and friends so did not have an opportunity to eat in therestraunt but the breakfasts were excellent. A very pleasant countryhotel/guest house.Calm and tranquility, ambience of all of the Hotel, especially thebeautiful lounge, nice to stay in a hotel once owned by a famousDartmoor artist, William Widgery. Excellent location and tastefully furnished hotel with lovelygardens,.Peaceful with a charming lounge.good local walks. Breakfast. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. The hotel was lovely with clean reasonable sized rooms. Our meal in the evening at the restaurant was lovely, and breakfast the following morning was of the same standard.Nice hotel, friendly staff, comfortable, quiet and clean. Room description a little exaggerated (eg. view "across village of Lydford" turned out to be a couple of fields in the opposite direction). Peaceful location, good room with excellent bathroom. Friendly, helpful staff.Comfy bed - especially pillows!. Clean and friendly. Warm and friendly. Comfortable bed. Friendly staff and excellent food.Comfortable and Friendly Hotel. Pleasant surroundings. Spotlessly clean. Excellent breakfast.Italian restaurant - excellent food. Idyllic location. The hotel fully met our expections so much so we are looking forward to a return visit in the future. Not strictly about the hotel, but the service in the attached restaurant was distinctly disorganised! We had to wait around 30min for our bill after asking for it 3 times, and the first one we were presented with was incorrect. The couple opposite us were served the wrong main course also. My other half's food was good, but my steak ("rare"?. The slow check out but this probably was not the owners fault as they were dependant on the tel lines. One problem was a long wait for breakfast - not a huge complaint as food all very fresh, but would be an issue for people with young children. Felt they could have either done with more breakfast staff or a longer window of time for breakfast (only 90 mins). It was like the Mary Celeste when we arrived to check in and we had to ring the bell at least twice to try to attract the attention of any staff (who were very friendly and helpful once they appeared!) The tea/coffee making facilities in the room would benefit from greater numbers of items - ie more tea bags. It was, however, very nice to be given mugs not tiny little cups to have our tea in!. We did not feel we received a particularly warm welcome. We were not asked anything about our trip, if we needed any information about walks, the area, local facililties. We were told the restaurant was shut that night and no other places were recommended to us. This really let the hotel down in our eyes and slightly marred our stay.We got an alternative room to the room we booked online, which was slightly more expensive. They hadn't read the information about special needs we had offered before our arrival. If we had any bugbear it would be that there wasn't a bar as suchalthough you were able to ask at reception at any time and your drinkwould be brought to you. Also our room was a little on the small sidebut I think we probably had one of the smallest rooms.Nothing that was areal problem. Good restaurant[ but only serving italian food]----bar service in loungenot made obvious.Uesless connection to the internet basic TV Only one chair. Hotel restaurant was closed (Tuesday), but the hotel recommended Dartmoor Inn nearby which was excellent (beer, food and service) - may be worth trying even if the hotel restaurant is open.Would have been good to have some good quality bread at breakfast, no sign of any brown bread or even better brown baker style bread. Lack of bar facilities. Restaurant closed on Tuesdays. On arrival, the receptionist said that we had been 'upgraded' from Cox Tor room which we had booked online into Links Tor room. The bed matress was very hard and lumpy. We had very liitle sleep and we would not have stayed in that room for a second night. Work space in the room limited - would have been nice to warned in advance that the restaurant was closed the evening I stayed. didn't get the room requested. Poor welcome. Confusion as to what the establishment was called. The sign on entrance had "Lydford House Hotel", there was no mention of "Country", this was confusing as to where we were. The web site said there were only two rooms available, in fact there was only one other couple staying overnigfht, there were obviouly plenty of rooms available. The lounge was cold and unwelcoming.Did not get the room that was confirmed when I booked. Rooms at the front of the hotel are susceptible to high noise levels from the dining room below the room until midnight and with deliveries from 5am coupled with a very noisy gravel drive. Hotel was also short staffed with breakfast items eg orange juice, milk, marmalade continually running out adding to the delays.
