On check in, they mentioned the hostel was fully booked that night, so I was a bit nervous it would impact on comfort and sleep quality. Was happily proved wrong, yes, it was busy, but I didn't have to queue for toilets/showers at any time, and breakfast was fine, with plenty of free space at the tables. So, a quick review of the important bits: Staff: Friendly and helpful, even though they were obviously busy. Dorms: Beds well built, strong wooden bunks. Loved the curtains - gave a great deal .
all reviews » I only stayed here for one night, but was really impressed by the value for money and what the lodge provided! I only paid 14 pounds to stay in a mixed 18 bed dorm, which I was very unfortunate in that there were not a lot of guests occupying the room and were all very quiet. The room was very large and the decor of the whole lodge was so cute! Very british and quaint. My accomm included a free breakie which was perfect for me with cereals, croissant, juices, toast and coffee/tea available! I w. The style of the Lodge is one of the selling points. It looks much better (and feels much better) than any other hostel I've stayed in. Staff are friendly, rooms are hard-wood, showers and toilets are clean, breakfast is free, free tea in the lounge, nice bar area. We stayed in a double bed, 10-bed room. There was no noise as the room was occupied by other young couples, so no all-night party-goers coming in at 4 in the morning. I heard some of the single rooms were not so quiet, but that's wha. This is the only hostel in London that I could find that can accomodate couples in dorms. So this is about the room with 9 double beds. It seems a little bit too small for 18 people but you get used to it pretty quickly because the beds are just sooo cosy and comfortable with extra-comfy mattresses and curtains that shut you out from the whole wide world. The shower looks ridiculously small but somehow there is never a queue and that's a mystery to me. Also the location is absolutely perfect - . This is the best hostel I stayed in in my whole life. Fast service at the desk, verry verry friendly, big saloon with 6 computers use free, coffee and tea 24h free, tv, breakfast: cereals, toast (white and brown bread), jam, coffee, tea, apple or croissant, as much as you like. The rooms are verry clean, the hostel was full and I didn't need to wait for a shower (the are verry clean!!). Also I love the house, it is like a little castle, beautifull. The tube and bus is 5 min walk, a lot of store. If you're looking for a cheap high quality place to stay while you explore london then this is it. *beautiful building *security boxes for ur stuff (bring own padlock!) *toilets & showers are cleaned daily *crossoints at breakfast are so yummy! The hostel is very quaint - nothing like a knight in armour on your stairwell. I stayed in a room with 19 others and enjoyed the little curtains for privacy that closed off my bed and the lockable chest under the bed - great ideas. The room would be very hot in Summer but perfect temperature for my stay. The cleaners were amazing - I've never witnessed such extensive and consistent cleaning of a hostel. Breakfast was good, the location close to the tube and supermarket and the free internet was . Definately a positive experience. It is not the cheapest hostel I have been to but is definately value for money. Breakfast, the rooms and the staff are all very friendly plus there is free computer access and tv and movies. It isn't just a static hostel either, it's got cute cottage features and the rooms made me feel liek I was in a childrens cubby house - but in a good way! The privacy in the rooms is also good. Bring a padlock for the lockers or store your things with the staff. Met some friendly and interesting people! I would definitely come back here. They even sell travelcards at the front desk so you don't need to queue at the station. We will definitely be going again. The breakfast was OK, especially if you happen to be a great fan of sweet toast and cornflakes. The place is not super central but the tube is 2 minutes away and will take you in 3 to 4 stops directly into the heart of the city. I really enjoyed my stay at this hostel and would definetly come again. The location was perfect - buses to Oxford, Piccadilly, Victoria, Hampstead, and sub on 2 min walking distance. I liked the secure internet connection (you received your own sign on/password so it was secure). The breakfast was good, but not the coffee. The cleaners came into the bathroom during the day and bleached the entire bathroom about every hour. This was a huge plus for me. Palmer's is a very well run hostel. This is my 2nd time to be here, it's still good in all aspects. The location is perfect, in Zone2 and only 5mins walk to the underground Jubilee line. This is the mekka for backpackers, and during our two day stay, we found great company in australians, americans and dutch in the very cheap hostel bar. Beds are a bit hard, and the shower stall next to room 001 (there is only one shower on the first floor, the rest are in the downstairs hall) felt like a shoebox. I'm 6'2" (1m86) so this won't be a problem for shorter travelers. nothing to dislike. Nothing at all!!. The door leading into your room opens & closes pretty loudly which can get annoying when trying to sleep. Not the hostel's fault, but a few of my dorm mates thought it reasonable to keep the main lights on until after midnight. The laundry facilities are a bit too expensive, but overall a great place to stay. NB: If you don't like stairs, this is not the place for you. Nada. If you do not like crowded places, you'd better think about it, as Swiss cottage is very popular hostel. The food served at restaurant was average. Ask for extra charges for padlocks and towels (if you dont have yours). They charged my credit card 1 week prior my arrival there. There were too many pubescent german school kids staying at the hostel. One shower for 12 guests in room 1 was not enough. Most staff was very friendly, but I had trouble with payment/overbooking (their mistake) to which the assistant manager was quite rude. Other than that, all was fine. We was forced to buy adapter, towel, and locker to close our cupboard. Wi-Fi worked good only in corridors, but not in room. It was a bit cold to sleep (in the end of November) in room with single glazing window. Staff was not so helpful when I asked to help me with booking of excursion. HOWEVER, in my opinion, all this cons are nothing comparing to huge amount of pros. I needed to buy a adapter to my eletronic devices (because the british standard plug is different). The Hostel must think about it, because there are a lot of tourists from diferent countries who won't use anymore this adapter after visiting London. So, if some plugs have had adapters, it would be better. nothing. The staff didn't acknowledge us when we came in, and tried their best to ignore us. Also they were loud when on reception, so you could here this in the room. The parking facilities were poor and not organised. We were asked to move the car, but their were no available spaces. I also find the additional cost for more breakfast pricey. The pub closes really early. Beds aren't terribly long, and being 6'0" made it a tight fit. I stayed in 302 which is a 21-female dorm at the top floor, under the roof. A window was broken and it was very cold. There were wooden beams making it difficult to navigate in the dark. Breakfast was VERY basic. Toast, muesli/cornflakes and a croissant. You could add cheese/nutella/ham for an extra £2, but to be honest, I could get better breakfast at McDonalds for the same price, which was just a 3-minute walk away. Internet is tempermental sometimes, and a little slow, but it's free and the only issue I had!. I stayed at a 6-bed female only room. The beds were each grouped as triple bunk beds. I got the highest one of the three and found it quite high. It was also the two triple bunk beds one in line with the other, just leaving a small corridor in between both of them and the wall. I honestly found the bedroom really small for 6 people. It had an weird smell as well, not sure if because of the curtains, but the windows never seemed do be open either. I felt pretty cold when I was in the bedroom(fortunately not in the lounge). I recommend strongly them to improve their heating system. The doors slam really loudly, which made for an interrupted sleep. Beds are a bit hard. Potentially upgrade to a double bed if you are a bit taller like myself. Weak wifi at evening time. i chose a large dorm, most others were very considerate of people sleeping at slightly unusual times but with a large dorm there are a few inconsiderate people. The rooms were hot (this was the hottest July in England in over 200 years) and we were allowed to open the windows only a bit so we were melting. But I realize this isn't an everyday occurrence. When I had questions sometimes there was one particular girl (dark hair) who wouldn't even look at me and the one time I did approach her, she said she couldn't be bothered at the time. But the other staff members were helpful. The traveller should not mind sleeping in a single curtained bed. If you're okay with that than there is nothing not to like.Most but not all of your fellow residents are young people. Not a complaint. But to be borne in mind by the older traveller. None. Only one very small shower near our room and tiny toilets. Very thin pillows. The 14 bed room was tight on floor space due to size of people's cases, it would be good to have a dressing room with sockets so you can get ready eg dry hair without disturbing others. Nothing. I'm 6' 6'' would be nice to have had a longer bed. I was fortunate to have a lower bunk as I would have had difficulty on top. Would have been better if I could have reserved a lower bunk, the policy at Palmers Lodge was based on a first come first serve basis. Don't have any expectations of the breakfast, but hey: don't forget what you have paid for a good located hostel in London city...!. the room looks a little bit old, but it is still comfortable. Only a catch: there was only one hairdryer and you're not allowed to use it on your bedroom, only in a toilet in the ground floor. Taking a shower was a little difficult, because the water only stays for 20-30 seconds at a time. They need somewhere to put your things at the sinks in the bathrooms, while brushing your teeth, washing your face, etc... Free breakfast not as good as it was in past trips, desk staff not as friendly. Maybe switched to new management? My dorm had no lighting where my bed was located so had to basically pack in the dark. there could be more shower rooms. could be more shower rooms. Nothing.
