Room Decor, pleasant layout and facilities, especially the complimentary toiletry pack. The sound proofing was excellent: considering there was a busy taxi rank right outside, we could not hear a thing. Everything about our stay was spot on. Room was spacious, bed was really comfortable and cleanliness excellent. Food was also superb.Excellent hotel, room, facilities and in room breakfast were superb. staff extremely helpful. would definitely stay there again.

We liked everything about the hotel. Charge for breakfast very high so did not have breakfast. Could have been a few degrees warmer in bedrooms and public areas. room was very hot and no air conditioning was available. Yes, it was far too hot throughout the Hotel. Poor organisation at breakfast; slow service of coffee and toast. Room too hot. When asked staff sid there was nothing that they could do. Noise from the wedding party prevented us from having the window open til late into the night. Cost of breakfast far too high. The bar staff wanted to charge over £7 for 2 bottles of water!. Being evacuated twice just before midnight and again at 7:00am by afalse fire alarm on the last night of our 3 night stay. Children ofguests at a wedding reception were running about the corridors thatnight too and going up and down in the lift - no adult supervision.IComplained to Reception Staff. The kettle did not work on the finalmorning and there was no bath mat replacement.only marked poor because the bar area was being refurbished and the temporary facility was cheerless. Yes - the lack of a lift (as above). The reception staff were very aggressive on arrival and the subsequent bill was incorrect. This is my third stay at this hotel and on all occasions I have had to go out to get a drink!!. Very handy location, right opposite the station. But be aware that there's very little else within walking distance, except the occasional chip shop and takeaway. The city centre and the university are a cab ride away. Thankfully there are lots of buses and cabs available from right outside.The breakfast was medium: not a very wide selection and when empty, bread/juice etc was not refilled very fast. The staff at this hotel need to improve their attitude. The hotel has now lost its style having been modernised.

Hotel information details

The historic Midland has played host to many royal visitors over the years since it opened in 1841 including Queen Victoria, who stayed twice during the 1840s. The dinner menu served to her Majesty's party in 1849 is still displayed in the cocktail lounge today. The Duke of Edinburgh also dined at the hotel with the High Sheriff of Derbyshire and other local businessmen in 1964, and Princess Alice attended a luncheon for St John's Ambulance in the 1980s. More recently we have been pleased to welcome two Prime Ministers and several Cabinet Ministers, as well as many Captains of Industry and famous faces from the worlds of sports and entertainment, including Cliff Richard, Dame Vera Lynn and Sir Norman Wisdom to name but a few.
