The place is easy to find and was just enough outside of the city to feel we were in the countryside. The owner greeted us in the parking lot (almost unheard of!) to welcome us. We walked into Volterra a couple of times during our stay. It was, of course, uphill but was manageable in 10 minutes, and that with a toddler in a stroller. (Although, I would recommend a sturdy stroller like a jogger) We had requested a crib for our daughter and it was set up in the room when we arrived. We used the B. all reviews »
The location is wonderful for who travels with car (it is far away from train station). Locating outside the center of volterra under an ancient gate, it is easy to reach the center or the wonderfuel country landescapes by walking. The garden is exquisite, just like a mini paradise, maybe even better because it is a paradise with Wifi:) The onwer Luciana is very kind and very helpful.
Ii Portone was like living in the real italian countryside, situated
outside the walls of the city the apartments were quaint, so peaceful no
noise, best sleep we had in ages, julianna the owner was so friendly and
helpful even if she had very little english but hey why should she we
were in Italy and it made it all more real.
Lovely location - Volterra stunning historic town with marvellous amphi-theatre and lots of nice bars and shops.
Il Portone beatifully maintained surrounded by olive trees and pretty meadows. Apartment clean and well looked after and a pretty terrace for eating out.
Luciana warm, friendly and helpful.
Excellent location with free parking. 10 minute walk to Volterra city centre. We had a kitchen with gas stove and fridge, an espresso coffee maker and powder and bread rolls were provided. The surrounding views were pretty. Room had nice architectural elements. WLAN available.
The accommodation was really great. The personnel was friendly and there was everything you needed in the rooms and in the kitchen. Very clean rooms, a great backyard - garden area with the views of a hilly Tuscany countryside. Free parking on the property.
The apartments were really nice and were great in the mornings for breakfast before we left on our travels through Tuscany. The beds were comfortable and over all the place was clean. Ample parking and close to the city center.
Lovely setting amidst trees and hillside yet still walking distance to town of Volterra. The self catering apartments are tastefully decorated, comfortable and spotlessly clean. The owner is a friendly and helpful woman.
Best part of Il portone was the garden. Beautiful and blooming with flowers, lovely courtyard. Apartment was basic and comfortable with all amenities. A good location for visiting Volterra.
Location suited us as we like
walking. Takes about 10-15 minutes to get to Volterra town centre. The couple who run Il Portone were very friendly, helpful and welcoming.
the location was outside the touristy traffic, calm.
Nice rustic environment to sit outside under trees. Very welcoming.
Walking distance to Volterra, good location for day trips to Sienna, Lucca and San Gemignano. Warm welcome.
Wonderful historic hill town. Just loved wondering the streets. Great
accommodations for seeing the town.
Very helpful owners. Location is just 10 minutes outside volterra, in a quiet secluded lane.
Wonderful sourranding. 10 minutes walk up to the city centre (downhill when walking home).
Lovely location. Accommodation really good and welcoming environment.
Beautiful location and an authentic residence at an excellent price.
Garden, rooms, silence and is very good for visit Volterra.
very roomy. Building and grounds unique. Hostess friendly.
Authentic agritourism location and building.
Beautiful authentic rooms.
Nature outside of window. No city noise.
Location was beautiful.
We had a problem with the gas stove working the first morning. However, we told the owner and she fixed the problem in 5 minutes.
The beds have decidedly overly firm mattresses, but that is to be expected.
A steep hill from ii portone into volterra, would not recommend for the
elderly unless you driving.
Our children really enjoyed their stay here but I am not sure if there would be enough for them to do after a couple of days. Volterra is lovely for a short family stay but probably better suited for couples over a longer period.
Bathroom very small, water pressure rather low.
The only minus was a small walk up the hill to the centre.
There was not anything we did not like.
Most poorly equipped! Needs many things for overseas travellers. Knives that cut, salt, oil, coffee, sugar, microwave.
KItchen could have been better equipped.
Difficult to find with our gps.
Hard to keep the bath floor dry during showers, but a minor concern.
Absolutely no problems at all.
It's an uphill walk into town. Fine for us but some might find it difficult particularly in hot weather.
Had to provide every commodity such as salt and sugar. Didn't like having to dispose of own rubbish after a week with only one garbage bag provided. Internet unpredictable but then so was the weather.
no heat, very cold.
Almost 2km. from town, up STEEP hill. Very difficult to find. Apartment, not rooms. No TV, hair dryer. Difficulty in getting luggage to & from room.
Really old uncomfortable beds, old towels.
