First time was great, good breakfast, good location, etc. Second time there was a mistake with the reservation and they did not have a room for us so they sent us to another hotel (Channings) that they claimed had the same standard (not true) - and this after making us wait for a while in the lounge, so this second time, the service has been pretty dissapointing.Very nice quiet square location. Staff very helpful about transport and places to go etc. Weird choice of music in the restaurant (evening meal). No Teletext available, which for elderly guests meant turning the volume up would disturb those in other rooms. Nice glossy mags would have been good but not essential!. One of the window frames was broken when we arrived in the room. The telly did not work, the toilet flush handle broke in the morning. Our bags were not in our room, and had to be requested. But, that would not detere me from recommending or staying in this hotel again, although they were minor dissapointments. 20 min walk from Old Town. Car park. Probably too hot in the roomand the hotel - it was an early summer!. The continental breakfast, which we ordered to have in our room, wasvery bad (tiny servings, and rice krispies were sent up instead ofmuesli, which had run out). However the cooked breakfast, which we hadthe next day, was much better. Hot water had some breakages.This was the second stay at the hotel and both times the request for an early morning alarm call has been forgotten. Would be nice if it had a bar. The shower seemed to be impacted by every other water supply in the building, so during a ten minute shower you run the gauntlet of scolding hot to freezing cold, and occasionally the water would go down to just a trickle. But I guess that's one of the quirks of staying in an old building. My TV which appeared overly complex did not work and despite my complianing to reception on two separate occasions, the problem was never resolved. Additionally the lack of a computer in the room offering free internet access is a disadvantage as the better busienss hotels do these days provide this.superior room was average. The price of drinks was very expensive and would not encourage you to stay in for a drink. The tv remote did not work.Poor kedgeree at breakfast. Made with salmon, I think, rather than haddock. Too hot!! (Rooms and corridors) Extremely difficult to get in and out of bath. No bar that we saw. 1. Lighting in room was so terrible had to request desk lamps for sides of bed to read2. no paper or pen or pencil in room to write with or to make notes with 3. phone service was terrible - had to have desk try to connect to 0800 #'s for calling card calls; wouldn't work from the desk either (but did from a phone box a block away and from every other location over 3 weeks in the UK. would have liked voiles at windows to protect privacy especially in the bathroom!.

Edinburgh has two railway stations: Waverley and Haymarket. Waverley is the main station, situated on Princes Street - 1 1/2 miles away and is approximately 10 minutes by taxi to the hotel. Haymarket Station to the west of the city centre is 5 minutes by taxi a half a mile away.
