We chose The Bull because it was pet (dog) friendly. We booked a room advertised as a small double which turned out to be the most spacious "small" room we have ever stayed in. The room was a lovely garret room with a full double bed, a desk, two night tables, a full bathroom and plenty of space to move around. The hotel is a lovely period building immaculately kept. The staff are welcoming, friendly, and always ready to help. We had dinner in the restaurant which was really up to Michelin star.
all reviews » The reception was warm and friendly with the log fire burning, the staff were friendly and tentative to everyone's needs. I chose the small double bedroom which turned out to be 'cosy', no that small you felt squashed. Situated in a lovely Cotswold's village but close to Oxford it was an excellent location for my business trip and also sightseeing. The staff were exemplary and I'd like to single out Clare and Georgia who were very attentive when I suffered a sprained wrist during the course of our stay. The menus were enticing leaving us in a quandary as to what to select. Our choices were sublime tho' I'm sure that no matter what we'd selected we wouldn't have been disappointed. Friendly staff with good attention to detail in the restaurant. Breakfast cooked to order and delicious. Stayed for 2 nights and ate in both nights. Food was superbly cooked and well presented. Cosy bar for a drink afterwards. Burford itself has a lovely feel to it with unusual shops and a lovely church. Fantastic position in the main street of Burford which is a very beautiful, typically Cotswolds town. The food at the restaurant was great. Our room wasn't huge but the towels were gloriously soft and thick and the bathroom very modern for an old, quirky hotel. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. we stayed for 3 nights and it was a very relaxing break for us. The owners and their staff were all very friendly and helpful. we really enjoyed the evening meals and nothing was too much trouble for them Would have liked to stay longer. The owners and staff were all especially friendly and provided excellent service and advice. The food was superb. The hotel building dates back to 1475 and is full of historical facts and visitors. Lovely, atmospheric hotel, recently upgraded by present owners. All the staff were most helpful at all times. Meals were very good - the hot weather meant we could use the courtyard until late. It is such a great town that 'daytrippers' make it almost impossible to find a car park.. even to stop for a few moments.. because of the heavy traffic during the day. Overcome this by arriving after about 4.30 and leave before 10.30 in the morning. We stayed in room 10 it could of done with a lick of paint. A better selection of beers in the bar would of convinced us to stay for our evening meal because the menu looked really good. Parking was tight. I booked during the weekend of the Air Tattoo. The Bull's accommodation price for a double room, on this particular weekend, was £270 for two nights. On their website they list their rates for double rooms, at weekends, as ranging from £160-205. So obviously they put their rates up for that particular weekend. Quite frankly, and accepting that they have every right to do so, I still personally don't like that sort of behaviour.... it smacks of profiteering. Rather basic bathroom. Need to watch local parking restrictions very closely - sign on wall outside newsagent adjacent to hotel. Parking on the roadside, the premium prices on wines, otherwise nothing. The shower temperature control was unpredicatable and a hand held device woild have been preferred. The hotel car park is almost impossible, we parked on the street. Vegetarians need to be aware that the restaurant menu is not "veggie friendly", the only option was quiche with a salad which contained non- vegetarian cheese. parking. not too keen at our time of life on having to climb several lots of stairs to reach our room - however we understand that they are building two more rooms on the ground floor which would be perfect for a future visit. This is an old building and one should respect the amount of money it takes to maintain it, so bits in the corridors are tired and the pictures in the room a little odd, but hey, thats a very subjective viewpoint. No complaints. If you looked very carefully the hotel let itself down. On several of the rooms on the outside door you could see screw holes. In other words a sign or other such item had been removed and the screw holes remained. A cheaper hotel you can get away with it but when you are charging a premium price you cannot get away with it. The shower is subject to other users using the hot/cold water, breakfast was unhurried & car park small. The building is circa 1400's but would appreciated a constant thermal flow whilst in the shower. slightly too warm. Lack of parking and having to park on the main road. i had to leave. Bedroom Room 7 could do with better lighting to make up for small window. Unfortunatelly the mattrass was very unconfortable!. Some rooms are up 2 flights of stairs. Not good with luggage. Room facing street can be a little noisy. rooms far to hot at night even when radiator turned off. shower rubbish-fixed head to wall so can't angle properly and goes hot and cold struggle to keep even tempreture. Bright green light above bedroom door. Nothing. Lack of light in dressing table area. Not a criticism, breakfast could start at 7.30 to help residents get off to an early start. nothing. Great location, with excellent potential and 'bags' of history. This opportunity was deflated though by our feeling that we were an inconvenience. With the exception of the host, the hostess and some of the other staff could have made a greater effort to make us feel at home. Consequently, whilst the food looked great, the atmosphere was uninviting and we elected not to eat there. Unrealised potential - especially after spending £330 - is a shame. No parking as advertised as extending Breakfast did not start until 8 pm.
