The location is excellent, just 5+ mins walk from the main Kyoto station. Price is reasonable for the service and facilities. Rooms are clean and fully equipped. Staff served tea to us every day when we came back to the ryokan. They have a free cultural night event every night run by volunteer staff. They are so friendly and it was really nice learning about their lives in Kyoto, as well as pick up some origami/calligraphy writing. Highly recommended!

This was a beautiful traditional ryokan that I would recommend to anyone who wants to stay in traditional accommodation. This is a truly special place to stay – an amazing location, beautiful old wooden building, and incredible service from the lovely, kind Uemura-san. Our 8 tatami room was a good size, characterful and comfortable. The shared bathroom was never a problem for us (there are only 3 rooms in the ryokan). The location is very near to the train station. Owner Kenji-san was very helpful. He helped us to carry our luggage to the 2nd floor as the stairs were quite steep and provided us advice to travel around Arashiyama area. Basic facilities are provided such as towels, toiletries and tea. -

We went to Kyoto during August and it was very hot with lots of humidity so that was very uncomfortable but our room at Tanaka-ya was air conditioned so it made our stay very pleasant. This small ryokan is amazing. It is located in a quiet corner of Gion, but the kamo river and main roads (bus stops, convenience shops, etc) are just fewer than 5 minutes away by walk. It is an ideal place if your activities centre around Higashiyama. The facilities are absolutely clean and the room is comfortable. The ryokan owner is a nice, genial lady who patiently teach you how to use all the facilities (especially locking the main gate) and give you relevant information on travel in Kyoto
