  Nikko Pension L'escale is indeed a bit out of the way from downtown (20mn walk uphill or $10 taxi ride), but it is a fantastic place and value. Fujita-San (Kaz) told us to call him from the train station and he drove down to pick up our luggage. My husband and I took the train from Tokyo for the holiday weekend and we brought our bicycles. We rode our bikes from the Tobu-Nikko Station up to L'Escale, which was about a mile. We arrived early Saturday morning and Fugita-san let us leave our bags so we could go explore. Fugita-san was extremely helpful and gave us maps, directions, filled our water bottles and gave us some salty candies to take on our bikes. We then spent the weekend riding our bikes all ov
