We had to upgrade to the biggest room and weren't sorry for it. Everything is beautifully decorated in the halls and the atmosphere in the whole house is cozy. The free parking behind the house was very handy. The location on King St. was perfectly placed to see everything from the harbor to the shopping street around the corner. Sitting outside on the porch for breakfast was a great start to the day as was the breakfast itself. Finally, the fresh-baked cookies available at 5:00 p.m. in the a.
all reviews » My wife and I stayed here on an onvernight stop in Charleston while on honeymoon in the US. We arrived just as afternoon tea and drinks were being served in the sitting room downstairs and enjoyed some great southern hospitality. The room was spacious and clean and the house itself was ideally located to explore Charleston. There was ample off street parking behind the house which was included in the price of our stay. Overall it was fantastic value for money. I loved the location. It was perfectly located in the historical area of Charleston. We were able to walk everywhere, and see so much without getting in the car and driving. Parking was free which was another plus. Our room was very clean and perfect for what we needed. The stafff were very friendly. I would recommend Barksdale to friends and family. It was our first time to Charleston and it was perfect. Very economically priced when compared to other Bed & Breakfasts in the area. The Barksdale House is perfectly located a half block from Meeting Street and all the shopping on King Street. It is also close to a lot of great restaurants. They left out a bottle of sherry all night for your pleasure which was a very nice treat. The Continental breakfast was ample and had a lot to choose from. The location was amazing and I could navigate myself through the city very easily and the B&B was very close to all of the action of downtown. The staff was very helpful, they even helped me bring my luggage to my room. Loved that they had a fireplace in my room, it makes for the perfect cat nap. I will be staying here again!. The young woman who greeted us was excellent, offering assistance for everything; the breakfast on Sunday was better than we had thought - I believe the breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday are eggs, bacon, potatoes, toast, fruit, cereal, juices, and sweets; the room we had was delightful, and the king-size bed was very comfortable. We were greeted by friendly staff upon our arrival. Our room was lovely, and had southern charm. We enjoyed the fresh, homemade breakfast while sitting on the spacious back porch. The mattress was too firm for my liking. The TV was an LCD but had analog programming. Also there was an Aerobics class that met somewhere closeby that cranked up their music both weekday mornings we were their at 6:45am. It was very difficult to sleep in through the blasting music. This isn't their fault, but my room was next to the stairwell, I'm a light sleeper so I could hear the day to day commotion and it started early. I would have liked to have had a heavier blanket, but that is also my preference for sleeping. Next time, I will just bring a heavy blanket and possibly request a room away from the stairs. The place is locked up at 8:00 pm so when you come back at night there is no one there. Being a stranger in a strange town, it would have been nice to know there was someone on duty all night. Everything was great- no complaints. We stayed in the backhouse and the room looked like it use a little fixing up. The carpet was split at the seems, a light fixture plate was missing from the wall, the lighting was poor. Nothing. No comfortable lounging chairs in room but not in room too long. The receptionist who received us as we arrived was very unfriendly - acted like she didn't want to be there. Wireless internet wasn't working well. There is no gathering room to relax in, although the outside patio and porch were excellent. And the king mattress was pretty soft for my bad back. Loved the rooms though. You could hear through the walls. Noise from the street. The reception area was in the breakfast room - there is no separate lounge. The staff is at work on the computer most of the time there which is distracting. They need a separate reception area. Also, wireless reception is spotty and slow. nothing, it was everything they said it would be. Breakfast room is very small and also functions as check-in/lobby. my only complaint and is that the a/c register was directed towards the bed and should probably have faced up towards the ceiling as cold air drops anyway. squeaky hinge on wardrobe. The room could have used more electrical outlets. The bathroom in our room needs refurberation. There is mildew growing on the shower wall. Bathroom starting to show a little wear. The eating area seemed crowded at times. More breakfast variety would have been appreciated. The garden/porch/patio area needs enhancement. Nothing. No dislikes. There is nothing wrong, it's a very good place to stay. Breakfast was like a continental breakfast. I expected an egg casserole or at the very least hard boiled eggs. I suggest room darkening shades in room 5....way too bright at night. The tv was small. I had to walk up a flight of stairs. Could use a more homey atmosphere, i.e. living room to talk with others. Could have used more lighting in carriage house bedroom. Light on fan would work. Never really got much good information on tea time hours from staff who appeared new and inexperienced. no early morning brew facilities if you have used what you have in your room. Nothing.
