Thornbury Castle
Castle Street, Thornbury (Thornbury) BS35 1HH
King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn slept in one of the bedchambers and walked through the ancient gardens at Thornbury Castle, a Tudor castle near the Cotswolds and Welsh Borders.
Thornbury Castle resonates with history and is the only Tudor Castle in England to be opened as a hotel. There has been a vineyard within its walls for over 500 years, from which Thornbury Castle wine is still produced.
At the castle you will discover atmospheric bedchambers, delicious Sunday lunches, free broadband, roaring fires and many historic features including suits of armour.
On-site facilities include croquet and archery, and clay-pigeon shooting and falconry can be arranged with prior notice (extra charge).

What people say
marvellous historical ambience. outstanding interior decoration and desigm. fabulous food and dining experience. truly friendly, caring, professional staff. unbeatable room. exquisite garden and romantic [including part ruin ] setting next to unforgettable church.
The rooms that we booked were not allocated. A mistake by staff only had us in one room when two interconnecting rooms were booked. Two rooms different floors with children not what was requested. Four poster beds were non existent. Very disappointed.all reviews »
I loved being able to stay in such an historic place! The Bedford room was amazing and the bed was so comfortable. The complimentary sherry was a really nice touch and the toiletries were excellent quality. This was a most wonderful experience.
The room was fantastic. It was a very large room with a nice size modern bathroom, large sitting area with a fireplace, and a great bed. Dinner and breakfast was great and the service was superb.
The Castle was very romantic, crammed full of history, the staff were very attentive and friendly; the room was fabulous, the food glorious, very warm and cosy, the whole experience was fantastic.
Our favorite stop in all of England. Stunning castle with beautiful
rooms and very welcoming and helpful staff. Grounds are gorgeous and
very relaxing after day of touring.
The Staff could not be more nice. They went above and beyond to accommodate us. The food was incredible. The castle itself was an experience of a lifetime.
The experience of staying in a castle. Food was excellent and the grounds/gardens were wonderful. Very peaceful and I really did feel relaxed.
Of course it wasn't cheap! But by booking through letsbookhotel.com we
obtained a substantial reduction on the quoted room rate.
Staff and ambiance were really good.
Food was of a good standard but the Wines were expensive .
Highly enjoyable.
We stayed in the Tower and it was a fantastic room. The 10 foot wide bed was a sight to see.
A very historic place, we stayed in The Mary 1st room, which was fabulous!.
The castle is beautiful and the grounds are very pretty and peaceful.
The Castle rooms are very romantic. Perfect for a special occasion.

Service exceptionally good.
Superb and unique.
Beautiful castle, and gardens. Very comfortable bed and spacious room.
We were upgraded to a higher priced room. Friendly staff.
The Castle is very beautiful and
historical. Our room had a good
view. Food here is fantasy
and we enjoyed our lunch very much.
It's an atmospheric, historic castle.
liked everthing.
We loved everything about Thornbury.
There wasn't anything we didn't like.
There was nothing I didn't like.
Four poster bed was a double, needs to be king size in all rooms I think.
Of course it wasn't cheap! But by booking through Booking.com we
obtained a substantial reduction on the quoted room rate.
There is no air conditioning in the rooms. We visited in July and the room was hot. We slept with the windows open, which made it better. It would be nice to at least have fans to use in the case the weather is hot.
The night we stayed the service in the restaurant was terrible, our
order was messed up & took over an hour between appetizer & main
course & when it finally came the beef was tough as though it had
been cooked in a hurry perhaps even microwaved . I suspect that the
problem was caused because a disco was going on in the main hall &
the staff emphasis was on that.
I would have liked to know more background about the history of the castle. What the each room was used for etc. History of Edward Stafford and Henry the VIII stay.
Nothing we only wish we could have stayed longer.
The menu was very expensive and had only one vegetarian option (main
course), no starter. Cooked breakfast was as meat eaters but with no
meat, so no substitute. If we had to pay full price for the room, we
would have considered it overpriced.
The charge of room is too expensive.
It's a bit shabby and poorly maintained.
