the hotel and the service was excellent considering our large group arrived at the hotel at ungodly hours 4a.m. The hotel was so good that most opf us are at some time in future hoping to pay a return visit and will be in our best hotel guide book. The hotel has also been recommended to numerous other contacts as the one to stay at in Cumbria. Everything with a special mention for the Restaurant with the food being excellent as was the service.

Staff friendly, extremely helpful (we had flat tyre and Rachel did not hesitate to give us a lift to the garage and also lent us her car jack and pump). The food was delicious - locally sourced including salad and vegetables from the local castle's gardens, very relaxing and not stuffy at all. A suggestion I would like to make is that for some people one pillow is not sufficient.No but a suggestion...for special festive meals the restaurant would have been enhanced by more subdued lighting and cloths on the tables, maybe in the attractive burgundy used elsewhere in the hotel. The service was a bit slow at times.its location is pretty remote. bar menu was not available in the evening as advertised on website. breakfast could have been better organised. No bath, even though bathroom was big enough for one. Food not really up to scratch for the price. For example, risotto could have been used to fill potholes.One waitress gave an odd response when we were ordering an evening meal and helpfully made us aware that eating the king prawns could make us ill! Very bizarre. Waiting staff, have no interest really in what they are doing, no salt and pepper on tables, did not know what cheese was available. Just seemed un interested. Everytime we moved in the room the wardrobe rocked. dodgy flatpack I think. Doing everything to be like a little boutique hotel and missing out on the smallest details.The room we had was noisy and very small for the money asked.

- Follow the M6 northwards.
- Bear left on the A590 at the exit for South Lakes/Kendal/Barrow.
- Follow the road towards the west, onto the A5092.
- Bear right onto the A595 and head north.
- Turn onto Main Street off the A595.
