We booked into our standard room,which was well above standard. All was good until we found that the bathroom sink was blocked. The staff arranged for maintenance to come to the room. They were unable to fix the problem straight away, therefore the manager arrived and moved us immediately to a superior room with complimentary drinks. Although we were slightly inconvenienced this did not impact our stay as reception staff were so attentive and polite. Will definitely stay again.
all reviews » Absolutely loved this hotel! I booked the Malmaison mainly for the fact that it is a converted jail and that it was in a Lewis episode. It was a bit of a splurge & worth every penny! The bar was fantastic & both bartenders that we encountered were quite lovely! We were treated really well by both gentlemen. By far one of the best experiences I've had in a hotel in the uk. I would love to come back & spend more time. For my partner and myself it was one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in , we liked the fact that almost all off the prison has been left intacked and a cell has been left as it was just great , next time we go we want to stay in one of there cell rooms , just a fantastic hotel not forgetting the food was great so was the hotel staff , cant wait to go back. The setting was incredible and very unique. We were upgraded on checking in to a cell room, which was excellent. Our air con didn't work properly, which was uncomfortable, so we were further upgraded to the suite. I really appreciated that they took into account or comfort. The whole layout and rooms were immaculately clean also. The theme of the hotel is excellent and my partner really enjoyed the unusual nature and history. THe staff were also very friendly and with our evening meal accommodated our needs, as our young son needed young childs menu, which was accommodated well. The ambience of the hotel is superb The rooms beautifully furnished & clean The bathroom is equipped with wonderful toiletries - lovely bathrobes Room service food of an excellent standard and service discreet and pleasant. The hotel were very helpful when our booking could not be found. They gave us the only room they had which was a suite. They made what could have been a disaster into a treat. The Brasserie was excellent too . A wonderful and unique hotel, formally a castle and a prison. It has a great atmosphere and a really terrific look. Food is superb and the staff very helpful at any time of day or night. I loved it because it was so very different from the usual hotel. We had dinner which was very good, and the breakfast was excellent. AND you let our well behaved dog stay in the room. It was fun to stay in the oldest part of the hotel in a room made of three cells. We liked the quirky sense of humour in all the signs and the food in the brasserie was superb. Staff very friendly and wanted to make our stay enjoyable. The rooms were very comfortable, but the highlight was the original features from the castle's days as a prison. Location was perfect, in the middle of Oxford. Parking was easy at the hotel, at a small cost they offer valet parking. Settings were amazing, staying in a former prison!. The food was superb. The location is lovely and the bathroom has everything you could possibly need in the morning. It was a different experience staying in a cell room. One of a kind get away. the hotel location created within and around the historical jail is fantastic. Breakfast was excellent and location near the high street was convenient. My only complaint about this hotel is that our room only had feather pillows. I am actually really allergic to feather pillows and had a bad reaction while staying at Malmaison. By the time we realized this, it was quite late and we were not able to get other pillows. I would just suggest that the hotel have pillow options in the room for guests with allergies. As I stated above our air con didn't work. As you can't open the windows, it was very uncomfortable. However the staff were more than happy to accommodate our needs and the rest of the stay was fantastic. letsbookhotel.com did not transfer all the bedding requests and we had a bed rather than cot which we had to just take the mattress from...this was in my instructions, so no fault of the hotel. Disappointed that I didn't receive help with my luggage on check in which I had on previous visits. Absolutely no dislikes!. Parking was a problem - we had no idea that we should have booked our car into the hotel car park. We had to park in a car park away from the hotel which cost £7 but as we had the dog with us, that would have been a real problem, as we would have had to leaver her in the car (which we were prepared to do if the hotel couldn't have taken her). Nothing much to complain about. It all worked, it 'did what it said on the tin' etc. Perhaps slightly expensive - but not when compared to London or other international cities. Wish there had been more prominent prison facts & information. Would be helpful to have more detailed welcome info in room. Parking!! Limited & pricey. Bed perhaps a little too firm. We made 2 separate bookings, called the hotel 3 times to confirm / clarify but still they mixed it up. No apologies or anything. Shower was not working well. Bed was extremely hard. The lighting in the room was too dark making it more difficult to work. The reception staff were slow to deal with customers waiting to check in. limited space at bar adjacent to the restaurant - nowhere to sit. Pricey, but you get what you pay for. Music in the main bar was 'edgy' rather than relaxing. (Maybe an age thing!). Room was on the small side and the shower didn't work that well and was a bit manky. The only let down was the food wasn't the best, my partners food was cold and although my main meal was very nice my starter didn't taste right, so I think we would venture out for dinner next time. Reception - poorly arranged and irritating when feeling tired after a long journey. Generally unwelcoming and one or two staff need re- educating in interpersonal skills. Noise level in rooms above restaurant and bar. Not a major problem to us, but could become troublesome.. Small design issues such as lack of coat hooks in room, limited FTA channels on TV, and half the wardrobe space taken up by the iron. the bathroom - the shower was in need of repair the shower tray was all chipped and cracked and i just think for the money charged this shouldnt be the case at all. the bed was very hard and not conducive to a good night's sleep the bar was out of three of four ales listed on the standard list. There was no flexible cord for the shower head in bathtub or shower. No slippers The toiletries should be better for that amount of money they ask for per night stay. The fact that one needs to travel to the ground floor for the ONE toilet from the bar....and the lifts from the bar. Only one was working. It seems totally inadequate for a popular venue. The hotel is too dark both in the common parts and rooms. Pricey for parking. Card debited for mini-bar even though it wasn't wanted then refunded on checkout. Check-out times were inconvenient as I was on a course. I spoke with hotel staff who offered an extra hour FOC - however before this hour was up staff called the room to hurry my wife up. Poor service from one bar attendant...took 2 requests and 15 mins to get a drink delivered to garden. She had no other customers. Request to have room serviced at 7.45pm with fresh towels didnt happpen. Upon return to room at 9.50pm, had to follow up. Check out assistent unable to perform split of bill and promised to send by email. Did not do this. Only a mild observation - a lot of non native English speakers on the staff who although very pleasant, were a little difficult to make out at times. Or it may have been our Scottish accents that were the problem!!! :). Nothing. Rooms compact. Bathroom very steamy. Towels didn't dry well. Delay in car delivery on checkout. Expensive car parking. Check in and check out too small, big queues. The prison rooms are slightly creepy, and the taller travel should be aware of lots of low doors and vaulted ceilings. no parking, parking not included in the price. Checking in was very slow, with people frequently queuing. Cost of Hotel parking. Nothing specific to criticize. Would prefer if breakfast was included in room rate. Continental breakfast was limited and expensive. The AC was not effective and there was no link between the thermostat setting in the room and the room's temperature. The hotel ran out of flannels or wash cloths; so, we took a shower with a hand towel which was quite awkward. FYI: Bring The shower temperature is a little tricky and get scorching hot if you are not careful. We sat for 40 minutes waiting for our breakfast after ordering. Even the coffee came 15 minutes after we ordered. Another 30 minutes waiting for someone to arrive with the car but only after chasing various people to do something. Not a good way of finishing our stay. bed bit hard but eventually got used to it. the only thing I will say, car parking cost us £28 a night which on top of an expensive hotel was rather a lot, but we never let it upset our stay. Was a little disapointed with the breakfast. Was very basic and had to pay extra to get some eggs and sausages.
