Location was excellent. Proximity to Newbury town centre, friendliness of staff. The friendliness and helpfulness of staff. Large suite. Well appointed and quiet. Comfort, facilities, breakfast. courteous staff. Friendly staff. We were allowed to book into our room early. Given a bedroom with a four poster bed. The hotel has an excellent position in Newbury ( we went for the races). Plus lots of free parking.

Halls, stairs and landing looking tired, a bit tatty in need of a refurb.The hotel is old and characterful, but room decor has become tatty around the edges. Radiator control completely missing, and opening window to reduce temperature meant noise from Friday night town centre revellers. That said, I would definitely stay there again. The breakfast is soooo expensive it's ridiculous. Fortunately a good oldgreasy spoon in the town is much more reasonable!. Hotel looked shabby from the outside and there was no hot water in the shower in the morning. Hot water not readily available in room. The ceiling paper above the bed in the room was peeling off, due to a past leak upstairs. Noise during early hours of people using the car park outside as a shortcut and being sick on the way through!. Very hot, ventilation wasn't the best.slightly dated/in need of some tlc but fine. Kettle Did not work, Heating did not work, Bathroom Door falling off hinges (Room 110) Excellent staff tried to rectify all faults but most beyond their expertise. Was quite noisy, seemed to be a lot f people chatting outside our room at strange times!. a little tatty round the edges - could do with a freshen up decor wise. No lift corridors narrow and meandering. Shower was uncomfotably small. Drinks trays/used bed linen loeft outside rooms all day. Staff were notgreat, did not know if room was ready after check in time. Charged mycard several times for different ammounts (Had to call since I got backto understand what has been done). Very limited menus. It has a musty smell. Shabby corridors, windows. Decor 'tired' but understand renovation is in progress. The carpets were thredbare and smelled in places. The room was right on the main road with a lot of noise from traffic.breakfast not included in the price, the hotel was under construction, poor service. very shabby, desperately in need of a facelift, wouldnt stay there again because of this.......carpets are a HandS accident waiting to happen, being taped up with holes in......paint not just slightly untidy but hasnt been painted in years....looks ok on the inside in some places but the main reception, the stairs and the outside all look really untidy and breakfast is far too expensive!. During my stay (27th August) there was building work taking place and there will be for some time. The noise was hurrendous in the morning and i really had a bad stay. Afterwards they limply told me that it was the reason i had paid what i had paid already (the reduced rate from the letsbookhotel.com site and that the building work was advertised). It is but, barely. Absolutely avoid the hotel at the moment. The Hotel in general areas felt tired and un-cared for. It lacked warmth friendliness.cold water supply almost non existent - almost scalded myself in the shower. poor general maintenance of hotel - clearly under refurbishment but felt very down at heel. Chequers is a bit grubby and run down. It has scaffolding all over it.toilet was broken on arrive and not fixed even once we complained and staff didnt care when told them about the problem. The hotel was covered in scaffolding and seriously run down and in in need of repair and major refitting. Dont stay here its nothing like the picture. It's very run down and the windows are decayed, but it's currently under rennovation, so perhaps this will improve in the future.It was awful the carpet was stuck together with tape, the net curtains were grey and torn! The staff were rude especially the duty manager, they tried charging me at the old VAT rate, all in all I was extremely disappointed. My sister spoke to one of your agents on Saturday to tell them how bad it was!!!!.
