My second stay at this hotel. This is a big old Scottish house and feels very special compared with many of the more "standard type" hotels I stay in when travelling on business. Breakfast was excellent with the finest presentation of a plate of porridge I have every seen. Lovely!!! Food and bar prices seem a bit high compared with room rates but, overall, I was happy with value for money. Would certainly like to return.

The hotel was very relaxing with a real pleasant and romantic atmosphere, with all the home comforts you would need. The staff were helpful and courteous at all times and always on hand to offer assistance. Just great for us and would most certainly return and also recommend to others. Liked the hotel, very country like, rooms were large. The staff were friendly and informative, the food was excellent with a good selection behind the bar on tap and stocking the fridges, our waiter was only too willing to offer advice on the offerings. Lovely setting and grounds make for lovely walks nearby. The hotel is in a lovely, peaceful setting, with grounds leading down to the River Tweed. We had a standard room, which was spacious and pleasant with a nice view. The decor is a little tired in places, and the plumbing decidedly dodgey, but it is an old building and this just added to its character. Quiet location peaceful and relaxing.staff were friendly and helpful.my room had been freshly painted and looked really clean and updated.the room my friends were in looked as though it could benefit from the same.everything worked and the stay was very enjoyable. Despite the www description there seemed to be a complete absence of personnel with fishing/shooting knowledge. Some furniture in 206 is very nice but much in need of restoration/repolishing. The 'near miss' when the shower head fell out of its holder and demolished my bar of soap in the bottom of the bath, narrowly missing causing a major injury to my foot. The head would not remain clipped in its holder when under water pressure. It was replaced the same day. That bit I liked. The only negative we had which saeemed to be totally outwith anyones control, was that during the night we were awakened by a high pitched squealing/whistling noise which seemed to be coming from the central heating although it was not on, however as with everything else about our stay, when staff were informed they were very helpful and actually moved us to an adjacent room. The bed was not very comfortable although it wouldnt put me off staying again. The shower pressure was terrible, but still managed to have a shower. The TV was an old and although watchable was located in a poor position. At least the channels (Freeview) were tuned in unlike in alot of hotels. Would definately stay again!. We had been very much looking forward to eating in the restaurant, but were very disappointed in the meal. The food was nothing special at all, and seemed to include some very strange combinations which to us simply did not work (though the cheese selection was superb!). Breakfast was better, but again not as special as I was hoping it would be. I would recommend going into Melrose to eat at night where there are several good restaurants. Menu didn't vary whilst there for 2 days and I was a little disappointed in choice available.I have stayed before and the food was exceptional. I cannot think of anything that we didnt like. Breakfast staff were grumpy and inefficient. All other staff were superb. nothing. Dog-friendly hotel of year, so if you don´t like dogs, don´t choose this one :) But we just loved to stay with a lot of dogs!. Nothing to dislike. Minor niggle- the restaurant menu could do with being extended with more variation for guests staying a few days. Suggest Scottish basics such as salmon, venison and vegetarian option. Nothing I didn't like. The bed was not the most comfortable I have slept in and the pillows were awful. Restaurant staff were friendly but inept. the weather was poor but at that time of year it was expected. Food was a bit of a let down and breakfast was served lukewarm at best. There was nothing which we found that we did not like during what was a one night stay. Breakfast toast needs improvement. Being a solo traveller at the hotel i found very expensive for accomodation. I'd like to visit the area again, the Borders are a beautiful area and the history more than just interesting, but accomodation for the solo guest, costly. Although the hotel itself was authentic and nice, we did not like the rather cool (clinical) atmosphere in the restaurants. No "soft" music in restaurants and especially the breakfast restaurant was very acoustic and talks at other tables could literally be heard. It appeared that the restaurant staff did not really like what they were doing and were not attentive to the the surrounding tables. Diificult to attract attention and hardly any smile. The two hairs I found - one on side of bath, the other in a drawer. My only other fault with the hotel was the service in the Bistro - was a bit disjointed, the girls needed some guidance I felt. still needs some refurbishing no clim in rooms apparently price of postcards... Nothing. Unfortunately the weather - but you cannot book this in advance. Small point but a little TLC would put the icing on the cake. Shower facilities could be improved for disabled visitors use. Grubby cracked windows. Food was not as good as we had hoped. Tired decor. Perhaps 4star in the past but unfortunately not now. Maybe 3. The food was a big disappointment & really let the place down. Even the breakfast was pretty mediocre. L:imited cereal, no yoghurts, no kippers or smoked haddock. Television was old, evidentally just in there to tick the box! Saying that I did not even turn it on. Pool area in need of refurbishment as it looked a bit tired. Creaking floorboards from room above and general sound of occupants. Room tv not functioning properly - problems with Digibox. Nothing. Nothing. Carpets in the public area's are a bit tired. The oyster catcher getting up at 0530 ! But that is nature.

The restaurant offers a wide and varied menu featuring some of the very best Scottish cuisine, made using only the finest, freshest seasonal ingredients available locally, with organic produce used wherever possible. The restaurant maintains a varied wine cellar containing more than 100 international wines. Each wine is personally handpicked and updated to ensure they complement the current cuisine. In November 2008, the Dryburgh Abbey Hotel opened the Abbey Bar' which offers range of drinks as well as an all day-dining experience, 7 days a week. On the ground floor of this historic country house hotel, guests can relax in the comfortable fireside lounges and the newly refurbished bar lounge for morning coffee, bar snacks and afternoon teas.
