What people say
The hotel itself is wonderful - great space in the communal areas, gorgeous cosy fire and lovely atmosphere. Our room had everything we needed although the bed was so comfortable we considered missing breakfast to stay in it! The staff were very friendly and helpful and our stay really was very special. We will definitely be returning. Lovely hotel, with lots of character. Yes, the florrboards creaked, but we felt it all added to the ambience. The room was extremely spacious, and comfortable with queen-sized beds. The bathroom was very clean. Breakfast was excellent.all reviews »
Authentic decor, very comfortable and lots of character. Extremely helpful and friendly staff. Fantastic breakfast and overall a very good experience. Definately recommended *****. We always stay with you because we like the Hotel itself. Friendly, helpful staff, nice room. Great restaurant and lovely room. It's always a pleasure to stay at this hotel; every room is different, but all are of good quality. Lovely helpful friendly staff. Friendlt atmosphere. Lovely big room. Clean and fresh linen. Great breakfast. Fast and friendly service.Room was large and clean, breakfast selection was good. Staff were friendly. Location, the special offer price, nice room and quaint hotel. spacious room. I have stayed at the Castle and Ball a number of times in the past and have always found it to be atmospheric, especially around Christmas and New Year. The staff are very good and the rooms are clean if dated. The atmosphere was cosy and the staff kind and friendly. The food wasalso very good. Altogether a very pleasant and comfortable stay. The hotel was old with character. We had a large well presented room. Excellent breakfast. Would definately stay again. The attitude of the staff was wonderful - very attentive and seemed only too pleased to help. The Service, my room and the restaurant. Very clean room. Food excellent. The food was excellent and the dining room and bar area very welcoming. The staff were helpful and attentive. The buidling is old and has character. The availability of wireless internet access, the well-equipped bathroom. We stayed on a Thursday which was curry night. Curry and a pint for£7.50. The comfort of the bed and the tasty English breakfast. Accomodation / Room. Breakfast was good quality.good welcome from the staff, good service. Location and helpful friendly staff. Easy and relaxed. centre of town. tea making facilities, friendly staff, good breakfast. Relaxewd atmosphere. Central location. Nice atmosphere. The character of the building (not like modern hotels where each room is the same). Also its central locaton in the town. Nice building with lots of character. Good food, reasonably priced. Very convenient central location in a nice town.Shower curtain. (They always stick to you, however hard you try!!). Not a wide choice for vegetarians on evening menu. Toilets were a bit dirty and no toilet paper ,but it was a very busy Lunchtime when we arrived (told the waitress there was water on the floor in case someone slipped). TV did not work in the room but receptionist did come to the room to try to fix it and did everything she could . We were right at the front over loookng the High Street, outside a bus lane where the buses arrived from 6.00am. An option or information regadring room position would have been nice. Heating in room under windows did not come on, had to rely on electric heater. Also housekeeping left a damp used towel on the bathroom counter - errhhh. (I wanted to ring housekeeping but husband said not to bother as it was late when we arrived).breakfast was not very good, poor quality ingredients. The situation is wonderful in Marlborough High Street and the prices are reasonable I find it a bit upsetting that such a lovely old building is in need of a total revamp and I feel there is no money being spent on improving it. The place has become shabby and run down, the buffet breakfasts were cold and the whole place was not terribly warm either. The hotel in general was chilly especially the restaurant where breakfast was served. No lift - carpets and staircase area getting very tatty. Noise of insomniac upstairs. The room I stayed in, although large was quite dated in both decoration and comfort. For example, although I searched high and low I couldn't find a radiator, except for the towel rail in the bathroom. On a cold night/morning therefore it was a little chilly. Lack of a lift which meant that I had to drag my suitcase up. The lack of an air-conditioner. Lights not working at desk. Had to eat out for dinner because the menu was not great. Walked to the Pizza Express Restaurant down the road. needs a bit of a makeover. No king beds and no porter. upgrade needed. I feel the decor in the rooms may be getting a little tired. Attention should be paid to the food presentation and preparation. Had to pay an additional fee for Internet Access. Service at the bar and in the dinning room was slow with a lot of staff busying themselves with relatively non-urgent tasks (stacking and cleaning glasses) while a small number of young inexperienced staff served the customers. Noise from pedestrians during the night. Tatty decor and not very clean. Room had poor sound insulation, and was next to busy road so quite noisy, so next time we would remember to take ear plugs for sleeping or ask for a room at the back. The attitude of the staff and the filthy state of the hotel in general. which was one of the very worst, the disgraceful restaurant and the overpricing. Room not hoovered and very dated and needed a good clean.
