I proposed to my girlfriend at the royal and so wanted a something special but at the same time affordable.The royal meet all my criteria.It obviously impressed her alot as she said yes. Centrally located, excellent staff, clean and tidy room. Really can't fault the experience at all. Could ask for no more.Although our stay at the Hotel was for 2 nights only we found it suited our requirements very well.

The room was comfortable and well equipped but could have been cleaner. we arrived to find a twin room, but the staff were able to very quickly move us to a double room. the food was excellent. Being very close to shops and restaurants. Friendly staff. Not a complaint, but a comment, our room was situated on the side of the Hotel directly onto an alley which led from one or two public houses/clubs. On both nights of our stay there was quite a lot of noise from young people passing through the alley which to some people whose rooms also overlooked the alley could have become a nuisance if that happened every night. noisy at night- our room was adjacent to a nightclub; but all you need is a pair of earplugs and I was not too bothererd actually and children slept through. The noise from people coming out of the pubs.Rooms a little small but this was undestandable given the age of the building and was acceptable and added to the charm. Signposts to find car parking were not obvious when 1st arriving.Poor car parking facilities,. They could do with double or secondary glazing, we were at the front of the hotel opposite a pub and it was a bit noisy in the early hours. The position (High street) can mean that it is rather noisy sometimes. The car park was hard to find in the dark and the bar prices a little steep.Noisy extract fans outside window. Lack of air conditioning in the room. It was too hot. Room was noisy. the room was very hot good job it had a free standing fan.The hotel is full of retired people... Bath sheets rather than just bath towels would have been nice. Apart from cleanliness, there was quite alot of kitchen noise when staying in the Mews rooms. the parking was poor. The shower left a lot to be desired-lack of spray and heat. Dreadful room; very noisy from disco which went on late.

Travelling By Car:
From M5: Take Junction 27 to the A361 & Barnstaple follow signs to Town Centre.
1st roundabout take right exit.
2nd roundabout (Tesco's) go straight on
3rd roundabout (McDonald's) go straight on
4th roundabout (Taw Ford Garage) take right exit
5th roundabout go straight on
6th roundabout take right exit and pass the Bus Station on your left Continue towards the Town Centre taking the next left. Take the next left again into Boutport Street. The Royal & Fortescue is on your left towards the bottom. You may park outside to hotel to register and the receptionist will direct you to the car park.

Travelling by Train / Coach:
Barnstaple Railway Station is 10 minutes walk to the Hotel. The Coach Station is a 5 minute walk.
