Information about the area

We would like to recommend the picturesque village of Zalk, located between Hattem and Kampen, at the foot of an IJssel embankment, winding its way through the beautiful landscape. Beautiful, but surely not a sleeping beauty.
When approaching the town from a great distance, the first thing that attracts your attention is the flourmill (windmill De Valk). It was erected in 1860 and it still runs on Satudays when volunteers sell the ground wheat flour and are trained in the profession of miller.

Also visible from a distance is the Dutch Reformed Church (Nederlandse Hervormde Kerk). This beautiful and oldest church of Zalk contains the benches of the royal Lords of Buckhorst (Heren van Buckhorst). Once, these Lords were very powerful; even Prince Charles and Princess Diana are descendants of this family. This place is definitely worth a visit!

Zalk was put on the map by Klazien (ût Zalk, meaning “from Zalk”), a women that became famous for her homeopathic remedies. However, Zalk also became infamous for the beating to death of the last beaver living in The Netherlands in 1825. A beaver statue was actually erected for this and this can be admired at the top of the dyke in the centre of the town.

Follow the N50 in the direction of Zwolle via the Emmeloord junction. Exit the N50 at Zalkerbroek to the right (hm sign 242,9) Hotel / Restaurant Zalkerbroek.

- From Zwolle (A28)
Follow the N50 in the direction of Kampen/Emmeloord via the Hattemerbroek junction. Take the Zalkerbroek exit on the left after three kilometres.

- From Arnhem / Apeldoorn (A50)
Follow the N50 in the direction of Kampen/Emmeloord via the Hattemerbroek junction. Take the Zalkerbroek exit on the left after three kilometres.

- From Utrecht (A28) / Amsterdam (A1)
Travel in the direction of Zwolle (A28) via the Hoevelaken junction. At the Hattemerbroek junction, take the Apeldoorn/Kampen/Emmeloord exit in the direction of Kampen/Emmeloord (N50). Take the Zalkerbroek exit on the left after three kilometres.
