The historic nature of the building in which de Abdij is housed is apparent in all the rooms. From the 14th century beams under the old abbey roof to the handsomely wrought high ceilings on the ground floor; all rooms breathe the air of a rich history.

Most people know Dokkum from the history books as the town where the missionary Bonfatius was murdered in 754 AD. Of course the name of this Saint is forever connected to the city, but there is more. Dokkum is a historic location with museums (the Admiraliteitshuis), many wonderfully restored houses and monuments, narrow alleys and the old defence works - bolwerken. In a sense, Dokkum takes you back to days long gone.

Dokkum is the capital of the Lauwersmeer area, a unique nature reserve with lakes, brooks, beaches and forests. The large fishing harbour of Lauwersoog is definitely worth a visit, but the same goes for the smaller harbours in Dokkumer Nieuwe Zijlen, Oostmahorn and Zoutkamp.

The surrounding area is perfect for cycling or hiking tours, and a trip to the islands (Ameland, Schiermonnikoog) is always a possibility. Nearby, in the double village Paesesns-Moddergat, the old fishermen cods - a museum - is worth seeing. In Anjum, the well-known bird resort, De Fûgelpits, can be visited. The ongoing struggle against the tides and the sea can be experienced on the highest terp, Hogebeintum. Sailing along the Waddensea or the Lauwersmeer (a lake) is also recommended.

In all the rooms, the available space has been used in such a way that the monumental feel is very much intact, whilst creating maximum comfort. For our regular guests, it remains a pleasant surprise that no 2 rooms are the same in size or décor.
