From the moment we arrived at Fukuzumiro, we experienced Japanese culture, charm, politeness, hospitality & warmth. The building was a traditional wooden ryokan, which was actually far larger inside than it at first appeared. all reviews » We found about Fukuzumiro in Lonely Planet and decided to give it a try in order to escape from the more crowded cities in our 2 weeks visit to Japan. We stayed in Fukuzumiro two nights in a weekend last may and, simple put, the best experience of our trip. Short of words to exprese what an awesome time we had, from the truly japanese cuisine, hot thermal "onsen" and the friendly staff, all was 100% perfect. 5 min walk from Hakone-Yumoto, it is a perfect place to start one of the day trips to M. Our experience with Fukuzumiro was excellent, it started even before we embarked on our trip. Fukuzumiro staff made sure we're going to be taken care of during our stay and communicated with us with emails early on, several days after the booking was confirmed. We only stayed for one night, but the ryokan hostess, the onsen, the kaiseki course, breakfast, and overall service were excellent. I wish we could've stayed longer because it's fantastic! Location is indeed 10-minute walk from Hakone Yu. Very friendly staff. Huge room compared to other ryokan, heck, compared to western hotel it was big! Our room was 2nd floor, on the river and it was peaceful white noise. Beautiful building, little nooks with gardens everywhere. Private bath facility was nice, just big enough tub for 2. Old pine tree bath was incredible, hot spring water was hot (63 c!) but felt nice to relax. We had Japanese breakfast and dinner, food was all incredible. Dinner was huge, food just kept coming! Our room had agreat view of a fast flowing river.Traditional food was served in our room by a very pleasant lady in traditional Japanese costume. Wonderful experience!. Beautiful rooms. I really enjoyed my stay at Fukuzumiro. The history of the place immediately struck me. I loved the wooden creaky hallways surrounded by koi pond gardens. We were in room Sakura #1 (i think there are only 10 rooms there?!?) and had an incredible river view. The river view was completely private and natural, not a building in sight! There was a very impressive tree in the foreground. I snapped many pictures of the view alone. The river sound drowned out any sounds of traffic, neighbors, et. Very friendly staff and a good dinner. I think it's a typical japanese ryokan and it's very authentic. The traditional ryokan hotel style with its traditional Japanese food and hot spring bath (onsen). No outdoor onsen baths. The most expensive place we stayed, spoke almost no english but still tried to be helpful with directions. Although the hot baths were extensive there was a little mould around but this is difficult to avoid in permanently wet warm conditions. Onsen facilities are not really interesting. We had to check out at 10am. A little too early. Wished they have someone who could speak English a little bit more so that we can understand learn more about the culture/ethics etc. We didn't get to use the nicer bath because we were out sightseeing a the time it was designated for females. We only go the small plain bath and I felt a bit ripped off by that. Also, it was further from the train station than I was led to believe, we could not really walk (15+ minutes in 100 degree heat no thanks) and had to take a bus which was fairly inconvenient. No particular view from the rooms and facilities could be more up to date. It was everything we wanted!. The walk uphill to the station. Nothing. Direction wernt that clear. Onsens were nice, but a little underwhelming. Wish there was outdoor available. Showers were cold sometimes. Toilet situation not the best. nothing, but quite expensive. The comforter is too small to cover the feet tightly and not soft enough to tuck you under closely. The strict check out at 10:00 and no flexibility on wake up at 8:00 and breakfast at 8:30, quite hard with jet lag from Europe. We are a couple just married last year (no honeymoon). the only thing we did not like it was the bathrooms are not private, but, this is something we did know in advance, so nothing against Ryokan. Price is very expensive though. - Old beddings that I was allergic to. could use an upgrade. IT was even more beautiful in the past. lack of internet connection. The furnitures are too old. There are too many rooms without a private bathroom. I think if you pay more than 300€ for a night you should have a private bathroom (or at least a cleaning of shared bathroom each hour). Onsen wasn't clean too. Woman who make the room didn't speak English (neither a little). I wouldn't return because I think there are best options in Hakone.
