Recently returned from a week-long stay in Barbara Studios in Rethymno... If you are looking to stay in or around this part of Crete, do not hesitate to book with Panos and Iro!!! Minutes away from restaurants, bars, clubs, shops, fort, town centre, and the old port. 15 minutes walk from the Rethymno bus station, beach. Really, there's no need for a pool when you are in Crete. Panos, Iro and their cute (quiet) pet dog will make you feel at home instantly. Arrived at 11pm and they were still hospitable as ever. I was greeted with smiles and was offered advice on food options. My room was cute, quiet, on the ground . It's ur home in Rethymnon! The owner is so friendly, with his warm family members and the little dog "Lily" :) This is for sure the best hotel I've ever lived in. You can find small snacks, coffee and candies on the table in your room and juice in your fridge for free! Everything is ordered so well! I like the natural smell in the room which is unlike some strange smell in other hotels. I visited them in not a high season and booked a room without balcony but I mentioned I wanted a seaview room. The owners here are the most hospitable I have ever encountered. They help you with your cases (from the car), and treat you as one of the family, with desserts, Easter eggs, orange juice, coffee, raki, etc. in the room. Nothing is too much trouble; they certainly practise the philoxenia (love of strangers) which they tell you about. The room was spotlessly clean and very well equipped with everything you might want, including a microwave oven and coffee maker. Hooks, towel rails and switches w. We were staying in a Studio that could accommodate up to 3 people so we had plenty of space. The studio was well equipped and the kitchen had a kettle, coffee maker and toaster. The location is very good. Right in the centre of old Rethymnon close to the harbour and fort as well as all the shops and restaurants. Not far from the bus station. A lovely couple run the establishment and there are nice touches like fruit drink in the fridge and fresh coffee made available. We also received some cake. There's a lot to like about Barbara studios. We had a small apartment in this old Venetian villa with stone walls and shuttered windows. Panos and Iro who run it are genuinely warm and welcoming ensuring you have everything you need. The little treats Iro leaves for you each day, pastries or fruit were usually enough for a simple breakfast. Everything is kept spotless and you have a real sense of being looked after without it being in any way intrusive. And its bang in the centre of the old tow. The owners were SO nice. My friend and I arrived at the Rethymno bus station late and night and had no idea how to get there. One call and the hotel owner actually comes by with his car and picks us up free of charge. We didn't expect that and we really appreciated the gesture. The room came equipped with a kitchen. Although no breakfast, there was a few slices of bread, some homemade Greek desserts and even some raki to share! It was also nice that they gave us a map of the area which they pen. The most memorable feature of this property was the warmth we felt by the whole family. Beautifully situated beside the Old Harbour and village. Extremeny friendly and helpful owner Panos, made all the time in the world for you to explain local attractions/how to get to places. The hotel is within a 14th C Venetian town house so limitations due to its age but plenty of charm and places to sit outside of the rooms with inner courtyards etc. Very rlaxing and a great attention to detail from the owners, lovely hospitality. Parking is difficuly anywhere within the Old Town but this should not put anyone off unless they have accessibility. Great location in an ancient Venetian house, located in the center of Rethymnon, close to the old town and the fortress.Very clean rooms with basic comfort. Even though we only stayed one night, we were greeted with some small treats in our room and wonderful recommendations by the staff. We enjoyed our suite at the Kastro and the family were extremely friendly - even brought the guests home baked cookies in the evening and supplied fresh orange juice for our stay. You have to park some distance away but, as I said, you get help with the cases!. There were no major problems. The bed area was on a platform above the kitchen with quite steep steps. As heat rises it gets very hot up there during warm weather. The air conditioning run for a short while will address this. Whilst the kitchen is well equipped there are not enough plugs in this area. There are others in other parts of the apartment. There's nothing to dislike. Nothing. Everything was good!. Uncomfortable Bed Mattress,Bad sound isolation and sometimes especially in the morning no hot water. Everything was great. i suggest to put fan in the room for people who prefer it over air-condition. Nothing I did not like. Rethymno is a cool place but its best to stay there only a couple nights I think, its superb location to lots of parts of the island so if you stay longer you may want to rent a car and know you will drive an hour or so to most places (which is good considering how big Crete is). And definitely go to chania there is something amazing about chania. It would have been good to have a fan for the upstairs bedroom. The air conditioning didn't reach up there and it was very hot. Having to go home!. nothing. Nothing. The balcony had many bird droppings which should have been cleaned. The coffee maker didn't work. nothing. A bit hard to find;. The temperature in the room was first too hot, and then in the night the AC didn't work properly so it got really cold. No blankets. The soundproofing was almost non-existing, the snooring neighbours kept us up all night. It was the worst nights stay on the whole 12 day trip in Creete.
