  Mie Sumi (the lady at the ryokan) was very helpful in everything, including making reservation for bus ride to Takayama. My wife and I also made full use of the free bicycles in our exploration of the main sights in lovely Kanazawa. In our views, cycling is the best way to experience the city, especially when you have limited time. Even with three mattresses I still found the bed hard but wanted to experience the traditional ryokan. I would recommend it for being near shops and many places of interest.

No frills but the real thing: tatami rooms, futon beds, common ofuro. While the owner understands enough English to deal with her guests, she appreciates it when the latter make an effort to utter a few words in Japanese. Had the place not been fully booked, I would gladly have spent a week there, in the middle of the eastern geisha district. Am looking forward to my next visit! I almost forgot to mention the rate:

  This was just perfect. A modern ryokan with all the tradition and relaxation of old but with modernity and first class facilities and luxury. Tea and sweets were served whenever we returned from shopping or sightseeing. Excellent food is available in the restaurant.
