The Pickwick Papers were written by Charles Dickens at the hotel itself, and it has also been visited by the 19th-century Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli, as well as the legendary violinist, Paganini. Room was fantastic extremely comfortable and you could ahve a party in the size of thebathroom, shower was fantastic. Food was glorious both breakfast and dinner. Staff were friendly and courteous and had a great sense of humour. Made may birthday stay all the more enjoybable as friendly staff, log fire, good menu choice for evening meal and reasonable. Breakfast fit for a king. Even the cat was friendly.

The food is excellent, well prepared and served.The rooms were very comfortable, the breakfast was excellent, the bar snack very good. We found the lion hotel the perfect place to just relax and chill out,sitting next to a log fire with a drink.The location of the hotel and its garaging facilities. The breakfast was excellent and the staff friendly. A good all round hotel and secure car parking. Comfortable room and the english breakfast was lovely.Only one thing, the room they gave us looked outo a small courtyard well top of a roof actually but their gutters needed cleaning and the noise of the dripping when it rained kept us both awake all night. Decor starting to look a bit old. Carpets wearing a bit thin, damp peeling wallpaper around window.A bit noisy in the bar with the television but we were able to sit somewhere else so it was not a problem, just a pity we couldn't stay longer. We were in a draughty room with no heater in bathroom on 1st night. Complained and were moved to even draughtier and v cold room on 2nd night (both rooms had ill fitting windows). We said we wanted to leave and not stay 3rd night but were offered a suite. This was comfortable and warm bur not adequate compensation for 2 cold nights costing £240. TV in room could do with updating. As vegetarians my wife and myself declined to stay for dinner as ,although the menue was extensive , it was basically too 'cheesy' for us .Also we had cooked breakfast , omitting bacon , sausage or fish - it was only as we were about to leave the dining room that we overheard someone else being offered a vegetarian cooked breakfast (sausages) Perhaps this could be stated. Food good though. Very noisy at the front of the hotel - a back room would have been better. My room was very warm, despite no heaters being used.tatty lift and carpets in corridors made parts of the hotel feel run down, other parts were fine - is it gradually being refurbished?. wireless internet should be free and accessible in rooms. garage parking was a little difficult. The shower in the bathroom didn't work properly, due to low water pressure.was on holiday witrh my aged aunt and there were too many stairs to the room. i did request to be relocated to a room on the same level as the lift but could not be accomodated. Felt there could have been a higher choice in the menus, however the food was excellent. The background 'muzack'!. I think it was quite expensive for the room we stayed in, I had expected a better room for the money.It would have been nice to have some english staff in the restaurant. The windows in our room (304) did not close properly. For example, when we arrived the bathroom window was wide open and it had rained in significantly.No big deal...we have a sense of humour! The squeaky lift may scare others.
