The staff at gables were fabulous! From the moment we checked in, all of our needs were catered for! cannot fault any of the staff!!!. Room was lovely,. we only stayed 1 night and found it a clean and friendly hotel good for the price. very friendy and helpful staff,so relaxing. Although on main road hotel was quiet with easy access to motorwaynetwork. Close to Gateway Retail Outlet with a variety of shops. all reviews »
Family feel to hotel, not just "conveyor" belt guests. Excellent breakfast and mostly friendly staff.very friendly atmosphere. friendly reception, bar and restaurant staff. Tea and coffee making facilities in room with satellite TV channels available. The staff made the hotel. They were friendly and helpful. Very friendly staff. the restaurant meals were very good and reasonably priced and the wine list was also quite good. Outside beer garden is very nice but drinks are really expensive. Convenient location and very helpful friendly staff. Friendly atmosphere. Good clean Hotel. Location. The staff were helpful and friendly. We had quite a long walk to our rooms.I thought the beds were a little too hard.... but that is a personal preference. The rooms are alot smaller than they appear on the website (we had the luxury bridal suite) The shower leaked and soaked the floor which made walking about quite dangerous as the floor was very slippy. The complimentary fruit basket was 8 grapes, 1 apple, 1 plum, 1 orange.Slightly under-staffed. Busy times caused delays in serving as staff, bar or reception, went missing on other tasks. The number of fire-doors that you had to go through to get to our room. The noise was unacceptable. There is little or no noise reduction between the corridor and room;There was a problem with fire alarms. The four stars do not make it plain that it is a Scottish Tourist Board award. This may be a personal preference however the bed was very small and very hard which meant an uncomfortable nights sleep.All else about the hotel was great.Noise of other rooms and running water. Limited choice of evening meal for half boarders. The food was very substandard at medium high prices. It was not very clean, especially the bathroom, the bed was veryuncomfortable with a plastic mattress cover and we could hear every wordthe next room said as well as them using and flushing the toilet!.

The Gables Hotel is located just minutes away from Gretna Green, within easy driving reach of Carlisle and Dumfries, and is a perfect base for exploring the beautiful and rich countryside of the Lake District, The Borders and Dumfries and Galloway.
Gretna Green has long been a famous destination for the romantic tryst. The Blacksmiths at Gretna Hall is popular for a unique wedding over the anvil. It is also an ideal place to come for a second honeymoon and to renew your vows. If you fancy a little retail therapy there is the Gretna Outlet Village together with the Gretna Sunday Market.
Carlisle has many places of interest including the historic castle of the border town, Tullie House Museum, Carlisle Race Course, and an excellent shopping centre.
Dumfries is only a few miles away and is the location of Robbie Burns' House with many of his old haunts. He is Scotland's national poet, and was customs officer to the area, which has always been a haven for the smugglers in times gone by. There is also the Camera Obscura and the museum to see.
Other local places of interest include the old Ruthwell Church and the village of Ruthwell - the home of the world's oldest savings bank; the poet Carlyle's birth place in Ecclefechan; Robert the Bruce's Cave in Kirkpatrick Fleming; Caerlaverock Castle (pictured) with the nearby bird sanctuary; and of course, Hadrian's Wall.
There are several golf courses nearby - the nearest being Powfoot Golf Course, 20 minutes' drive away; Lockerbie Golf Course, a half hour drive; and Lochmaben Golf Course, 40 minutes' drive.
There is also fishing and shooting available close by, together with an activity centre for the energetic who fancy pitting their wits at go kart racing, quad biking, or maybe a relaxing horse ride.
