all reviews » The size of the room was brilliant for the price, with a sofa and desk there was plenty of room for a child to roam about. free wifi was a plus, as was nearness to Dam square. It is in a really good location for all the attractions - a tram stops outside for example. The Bodega mural was stunning. Staff also very pleasant.The room and hotel in general was wonderful. No Safe in the room. no ironing facilities in the room, only on the sixth floor. a hotel of this standard shouls supply an in room iron etc. Draught thru the window in our room. Wi-Fi would not work, Internet through TV would not work, pay-per-view pixelated/unwatchable, had to dial 4 figure number for reception although no indication of number in room. lack of air conditioning - weather was very humid. I would stay at the hotel again but would request a room that isnt on the front of the hotel as it was quite noisy. The music in the bar was very dull, like elevator music.can be noisy for rooms on the two street sides, but it is quite if you get a room in the inside part of the building. given the hotel is not in a super clean (but quite acceptable) condition, a pair of slippers could be useful for the guests. bedroom was small and a bit shabby but bed comfy and all very clean. there was no shampoo/conditioner provided - which is not so good for people only travelling with hand luggage on flights and not able to bring bottles of shampoo! No fridge.would be nice to have an ice machine in the hotel..rather than waiting for room service to deliver ...paid 2 euros for a small bucket of ice...the rooms are clean but old and worn...but for the price excellent value. no minibar / minifridge. The wind is blowing from the old windows. During the night you can feel the cold. in the night o lot of noise from airco outside. It needs just a bit more updating and fix up... the first room I had was cold, no heating in the bathroom and there were no plugs in the basin or bath. Initially upon arrival we were given an unacceptable room for a 4 star hotel (room 402 we think). We were offered an alternative which was fine, but this initial hick-up was distasteful having arrived tired and late on the evening of 30th December. yes the cleaners making so much noise in the morning. The street noise was unreal, it was like the windows were open! The decor in the room could do with a little lift, the couch in the room needed to be cleaned or recovered. I would stay there again for location. The Wi-Fi connection was very poor. It is recommended to use a cableconnection. Amneties in the bathroom were randomly supplied.It seems that the hotel has a problem with mice, we were changed from our original room to much smaller room because I saw a mouse, unfortunetaly the second room also had a mouse. When we checked out there was an extra fee that was not told me, the hotel clerk said it was a tax that was not paid when I made the reservation. For the price charged breakfast was to say the least dissapointing . Staff although present were not particularly attentive .Room was small. No mini bar/fridge in room was poor for 4 star. We got the smallest room possible, absolutely no place to put the suitcases, which we could therefore not open . As well there was no decent cupboard to put anything in, except of 3 hangers. We complained and they told us that we could change a room the next day. But we stayed only 2 nights. I am afraid that they give out inferior rooms to bookings made through the internet. No fridge in the room. hygene standard very low.

Hotel information details

The rich history of the hotel started on its location when G.A. Heineken opened his first Heineken brewery between 1864 and 1870. Due to the city council filling in the canal in front of the building in the name of modernisation, he moved to the present location on the Stadhouderskade.

The Hulscher brothers continued the business and on 5 September 1870 a unique beer house, called Die Port van Cleve, opened its doors. It did not take long for it to evolve from a beer house into restaurant with the De Poort brasserie serving typical Dutch dishes and what were to become the famous numbered steaks. Since 1870 these steaks have been served and in 1997 the magic number of 6,000,000 numbered and certificated steaks was reached.

Evolving from a beer house to a Dutch steakhouse, it was not long until the first rooms made the building the Die Port van Cleve hotel. The name Die Port van Cleve comes from a memorial stone with the inscription ‘Die Port van Cleve’ which was found during the takeover by the Hulscher brothers. Some unchanged features include the unique frontage, which has listed building status, and also the unique interior of De Blauwe Parade bar-bodega. The Delft blue tiles in the Bodega date back to 1887.

Information about the area

The hotel is situated in a beautiful location, in the heart of the city, where you can really enjoy the real Dutch atmosphere. It is within walking distance of many shops, museums, theatres, places of interest, night spots and the many canals and the canal houses that Amsterdam is famous for.

Just in front of this 4-star hotel you will see the Royal Palace and Dam Square and it is next to the Magna Plaza shopping centre. There's much to explore in this area and the many streets leading away from the Dam can take you to every part of the city. You can shop until you drop on the Rokin or at the Kalverstraat, but a more hip area is the Damstraat with loads of coffee shops and hippie stores.

The hotel is only a 15 minute walk to the famous Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein where there is entertainment 24 hours a day. The area behind the shopping centre, the Bijenkorf, leads into the red light district. While a wander around the Nieuwe Kerk along curving alleyways will lead you to some pleasant restaurants, bars and more coffee shops.

Travelling information

By Car:
- On the A10 (Amsterdam ring road), take the exit marked Centrum.
- Follow the signs for Amsterdam Central Station.
- Turn right opposite of the Central Station (at Holland International).
- This street is called Martelaarsgracht, as it changes into Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal keep driving onwards.
- You will find the hotel on your right hand side next to the Magna Plaza shopping centre and behind the Royal Palace.

By Shuttle Bus:
- The Connexion shuttle bus takes you from Schiphol Airport directly to the hotel.
- It leaves from the airport from 07:00 every 20 minutes, from 17:00 every 30 minutes and from 19:00 every 60 minutes until 21:00.

By Train:
- The train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Central Station takes about 20 minutes.
- From the Central Station it is just a five minute walk to the hotel.
- Bus number 121 and tram numbers 1, 2 and 5 from Amsterdam Central Station stop in front of the hotel.
