Chateau de Portail was a wonderful experience and Claude Herbert was an amazing host. It was nice to be welcomed so warmly into his home with nowhere out of bounds. The house is charming, warm, comfortable and elegant with a relaxed feel to it thanks to Claude Herbert's hospitality. As a family with two young girls (aged 3 and 5) this can sometimes be an annoyance to other guests and the host but we never felt like this. The town of Azay-Le-Rideau is beautiful, and a great stopover between Calais and SW France. Lots of bars and restaurants to explore, nice bar by the river for the children to paddle in. Our children also enjoyed riding their bikes around.

of restaurants to eat. Azay-le-Rideau is a smaller town and we found
that charming. The Azay-le-Rideau Chateau is right down the street! It
was easy to drive to the other Chateaus in the area and avoid the
bigger city of Tours (parking, noise, etc.). Breakfast in the courtyard
was a wonderful way to start a day (and we are still wondering about
the horns embedded in old wall...) For a family of 4 this hotel was an

The hotel is placed perfectly for my purposes in the centre of the town, near to restaurants and to the cycle paths along the river. It's an elegant hotel both inside and out - my room was a delight. We booked at the last moment in a hurry... we didn't check the reviews or anything we just went for it. Driving there we went up the wrong road and our hearts dropped thinking it was going to be a crummy place based on the lay of the land. Once we got back on track the main road faded away to a long driveway to a perfect chateau experience. Its been really well renovated. Rooms are expansive with beautiful views.
