  My husband and I stayed at the South Place Hotel for a week's vacation. The hotel is in the heart of the business district, so it is a quieter neighborhood on the weekends, but bustling during the week. There are a number of nearby pubs, and a Marks & Spencer across the street if you require groceries. Great location for business in London; easy for tube to anywhere (from Barbican, five minutes walk away). So we had no problems getting around the city. We booked a studio. It was good overall, however showing signs of wear and tear. Location is good for the east end of London as is only 5 mins walk from Tower Bridge.
