The spacious self-contained holiday accommodation boasts a private balcony with outdoor furniture and sea views. Each studio and apartment includes a separate lounge area with satellite TV, sofa and armchairs. Heating, north-facing windows and a private bathroom with a shower are also provided. Facilities include a tour booking desk and secure car and boat parking. Shared BBQ facilities are available and some accommodation has a private BBQ on their balcony. Just 2 km from the centre of Paihia, The Retreat is a 3-hour drive from Auckland. Haruru Falls is a 12-minute drive away and Waitangi Treaty Grounds are only 7 minutes’ drive away.

We stayed four nights in March 2013 and needed the break after being robbed in Auckland. Jan and Kevin were unobtrusive but always there with help or information when we needed it. The location is a few kilometres "out of town" and we loved this. The town was too busy for us with constant traffic and people coming and going on the ferries. It was very relaxing to come back in the afternoon and relax on the balcony with some cheese and biscuits. The view across the bay is superb and we never tir.

After a long drive from South Auckland I was welcomed with a big genuine smile from Jan, who showed me my room with the spectacular view from the deck. The furniture is a dated and old but clean and the bed was really comfortable. The view from the deck is spectacular and I managed to get some wonderful sunset photos. The peace and tranquility ideal for the relaxing get-away I was looking to have. I would recommend this to anyone w. Our lodging was fabulous. When the lovely owner opened the door for us, we were blown away by the gorgeous view. The accomodations were great--living room, kitchen, bedroom, bathroom, large deck with view of part of The Bay of Islands. The owners were so nice and very helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Location to town was good, just a short drive down the road. We felt like we were on a second honeymoon. Very warm hosts :-) thanks Beautiful outlook..mesmerising Just out of town enough.. Spacious with fab deck.. Private & relaxed atmosphere.. Access to washing & clothesline...thanks Local knowledge & suggestions..thanks Very clean & comfy beds Full cooking facilities... We would like to stay with you if we were at Bay of Islands again!!!!!. The views from the apartment are terrific - 180 degree view right across the bay to Russell. We loved having breakfast and lunch on the deck soaking up the view which was like watching a living postcard. The apartment was very clean, well equipped and the bed very comfortable. I liked the beautiful bush setting. Really loved staying here. The view was extraordinarily beautiful. The owners were friendly but not obtrusive. The accommodation was comfortable and attractive. The locality was quiet without being remote. I really hope we get the chance to stay here again. The setting and the view, of course ! The spacieuse unit. The fact that there are only 9 units, which means the very friendly owners have more time to spend with guests. The extreme cleanliness (towels changed every second day (we stayed 9 nights). it was a beautiful location and had a decking which overlooked the water that you could relax on. - just magnificent. The owners were friendly and helpful. We loved it, even though it was a bit older than others we stayed at. the warm and freindly service and atmosphere were outstanding.Both Kevin and Jan could not have done any more to make our stay both comfortable. they also provided very handy local knowledge of the area. Everything was nice. The room was a bit old fashioned, needed a re vamp, but everything was clean and spacious with all the usual facilities. Good to be out of town - and great view across the bay. Jean and Kevin, owners and operators, have been running The Retreat for many years. Although their accommodations aren't luxurious, they are warm, comfortable, clean with a great view of the Bay. Location was wonderful. Just out of town with magnificent views over the Bay of Islands. Quiet relaxing and secluded. The hosts (stand -in ) were lovely, as were the owners we met at check-out. The warmth of the welcome, and the locations was superb, it was in every sense of the word A Retreat. The view of hills, waterfront, Islands, native flora and fauna, and a fabulous sunset. Definitely rustic, but clean, spacious, comfortable, and a terrific view. Staff friendly, helpful, and curteous. Would definitely stay there again. excellent view，quiet location，5mins drive to town，Jan and Kevin were so friendly and helpful，it was a amazing stay and we will come back for sure. Not a lot, although photos often make places look better than reality. nothing at all. The frying pan - non stick would have been better. No side lights in the lounge to allow for softer lighting. Nothing. We could not use our computer due to its being incompatible with the local wifi system (the 1st time it happened, we were told), The laundry is a long way uphill next to someone else's unit. Only one very small bathroom + toilet (not much for 4 people). Can be noisy when the people below (owners+reception) talk loudly. It was the only place we stayed that didn't have an iron and ironing board in the unit and feel that should be included. Nothing to dislike. Our stay was too short!. Too far to walk to town,, but if you have a car the view is much better than in town. No Sky tv. We felt the unit was a little dated, but it had everything we needed, and the positives outweighed the negatives. Needs a bit of updating. Bed wasn't as big as we'd have liked. Bitey things. A bit homespun but still charming.
