Set within a lovely Victorian mansion with extensive gardens, YHA York is just a 15-minute riverside walk to York’s ancient centre. This property also features a restaurant and a TV lounge. YHA York is situated within the quiet residential area of Clifton, 15 minutes’ walk away from York’s stunning, Gothic cathedral. The famous Betty’s Tea Rooms are a 20-minute walk, surrounded by York’s excellent shops. York Dungeon and the Jorvik Viking Centre are 25 minutes’ walk away. Guests at YHA York can make use of the dining room, or prepare food in the self-catering kitchen. The majority of rooms contain bunk beds, whilst there is a games room and common room for guests to relax in, along with Wi-Fi internet access. The property has just had a £2 million renovation.

Everything: the staff were very welcoming and so helpful: nothing was too much bother. The look of the hostel was more like that of a hotel than the stigma usually attached to hostels. The cooked breakfast was lovely, especially for the low price we paid for it. Also, the rooms were very well set out and in a very clean and tidy condition. Could not recommend this hostel any more highly: me and my group had a brilliant weekend with you and would definitely stay with you again if we visit York :.

This is a hotel without the extras (I.e doesnt have a hairdryer/towels & a tv on the wall), other than that it does exactly what it says on the tin!! Excellent staff, excellent food, excellent value for money all round!!) Would definitely stay here again!. it was a relaxing atmosphere quite young staff but very friendly and welcoming not like some other snooty hotel staff, although its a youth hostel there was a balance of ages across the board. It was very clean and comfortable and the food in the cafe was a good price. very satisfied over all. The hostel was much more like a hotel than we expected and we were delighted with our room which opened onto a small courtyard. The staff were great and coffee was delicious! Also appreciated that it was in walking distance to the city. Would definitely stay again and recommend to others. the YHA is a great value for money place to stay. 10 mins walk from the city centre, the staff are friendly and the place looks great since the refurb. Always a lot of friendly people around to talk to. Can higly recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in York on a budget. Recently restored the YHA York is one of the nicest hostels I have been in England. Good location about 20 minutes walk along the river north of the city center. Staff was friendly and welcoming. Plenty of parking available. Really friendly staff and the location was only 15 mins walk from York city centre. Room was basic but very clean, newly refurbished ( by the look of it) and comfortable. Breakfast was great for both value and taste. nice staffs. they helped us switch to twin beds room at the same price of per person. Quite warm room and nice kitchen. A little far away from city center, but via a short cut nearby river only 10-15 mins on foot. The room was large and very clean also the showers were very hygienic, no ugly grout to go mouldy, also good sizing, better than some hotels. Staff friendly and helpful, seating in shared area very comfortable. Excellent value for money, very comfortable beds, great shower facilities, great food. Very enjoyable. All 14 people who stayed agrees 100%. Will definitley stay with you again. The staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and warm. It was close to the city centre with a lovely walk by the river. All in all I highly recommend staying here. Quite expensive considering that rooms have 8 beds. someone play rock really loudly late at night and early at morning, so I could not sleep very well!. Although the food I had was very good, a little more choice would be better, i.e jacket potato with choice of simple fillings. The coffee and juice for breakfast were mediocre. Maybe I was unlucky but the juice was practically water, I wondered if it was concentrate that was too diluted. Being disturbed by one Asian girl telephoning and texting in the dormitory at 2am. Another Asian girl, the next night, came in at 1.30am and made lots of noise and was talking to a man in the hallway where the bathroom is. She then got up at 5am to do her washing apparently. I was there to work, exhibiting ceramics and needed sleep and had to get up at 7am with a hard day in front of me. Our stuffs were moved out of the room without any notice, because the people of the staff gave us the wrong room by mistake. This episode was a bit annoying, but they gave us free breakfast to apologise. The coffee is awful. As a mature couple at nearly 60 years old bunk beds are not the best of sleeping arrangements but for one night it was ok but would not have stopped for more than one night with bunk beds. Couldn't fault. Bed was to small/short for me. there weren't enough power points for charging phones etc. the rungs of the ladders for the top bunks could have been a little wider to accommodate bare feet. the breakfast could have been larger portions. Nothing. Showers. Only two in our wing. One not working ( no light) other shower slow to drain and flooding whole shower area. Was in a four bed room with shared bathroom. Room H17 had a vibrating noise coming from somewhere beneath it. I spoke with Andrew the reception manager and he did an excellent job at trying to locate the problem for us, but to no avail. We are a family of 6 with 4 children and the noise meant our baby had a disrupted sleep. Being woken by 2 drunk room mates at 4am in the morning!. Could do with a much larger bike store with better access. No ensuite Whole upstairs always smelled of sweaty trainers!. Nothing. I was not sure about the new self catering kitchen - it felt as though it was hidden away and much too small for the size of the hostel. Also, a small point I know but no hooks or anywhere to put belongings off the floor whilst in the new showers. More showers. The fact that no towels or basic toiletries were provided. You should have these as a payable option. Rooms were abit warm, not enough windows to open. No complaints. Too much cold room. the door coming out of reception needs a sticker on it to let you know to push as it sticks and causes confusion. Having to wait for the toilets!. No mirrors in room or in bathrooms. You have to pay for wifi and is rather expensive if you are not a member. nothing. It is hard to walk to the hostel at night as the riverside path gets very dark. fan in bathroom was rather loud and stayed on for ages. Heating in room didn't work but quilts were warm.
