Our room had beautiful antique desk and a curled wood bed. Very comfortable. I would lay on it and enjoy the view of the last orange leaves of autumn dancing on the tree. Great breakfast and the cook was a porridge fan which was a bonus. Comfortable lounge area too. A literal stones throw from the opera house. We were there to see Leo Sayer who didn't disappoint either. Good parking facilities and a bar if nec. όλα τα σχόλια »
Welcome from owner/manager and help with bringing case upstairs. an old world style hotel in good situation adjoining pavilion gardens; however upper front view room slightly noisy with traffic on main road during night.
Staff were friendly and welcoming. Rooms were clean and plenty of tea and coffee provided in the room. Evening meal was very nice and good value for money. Location for Buxton festival events was excellent.
i felt the hotel was clean the rooms were basic but again it was nice and clean the breakfast each morning was really good and i felt the staff to be polite and friendly.
The food was wonderful. We ate at the hotel boths nights of our stay, and were very impressed, value for money and a very high standard. The staff were very friendly.
I liked the free parking and the free wifi. Also I liked the price of the room and that breakfast was included. The room was quaintly decorated, with a comfortable bed.
Friendly welcome by manager who took my luggage up to my room himself.
Pleasant quite spacious single room with bath when in was expecting
just a shower.
Staff friendly and helpful. Ready to stay late when flights and train running late. Breakfast good. Room comfortable. Good value for money.

Very helpful, friendly staff. Nice bar and lounge. Superb breakfast. Hotel is being refurbished tastefully and to a good standard.
Excellent location for visiting the Opera House. Large spacious rooms and very comfortable bed. Staff friendly and helpful.
Second visit and enjoyed our stay, good value for money and great breakfast very well situated for the Opera House.
Good staff; excellent breakfast, public areas well presented. Excellent location for town centre and opera house.
Excellent breakfast, and very clean rooms. Appreciated linen table cloths, and waiter service rather than buffet.
Friendliness and helpfulness of staff. Good food. Very comfortable bar/dining room/lounges.

Price.
The Portland is good value for money.
Good breakfast choices served early enough to be convenient for business travellers.
Limited bar facility but
the owner prices competitively.
I would stay here again if in Buxton.
The Staff were very helpful and friendly,
The breakfast was good.
The evening meal was good value,
Great location for town,Opera House and surrounding areas like Chatsworth House :).
Manager and limited staff good. Pleasant, spacious, quiet room as requested. Good breakfasts. Parking limited, but it worked for us.
Central - easy to find.
Buxton is great to place to chill out and the Theatre is excellent. For a good meal with a pint at a fair price ! Weather spoons pub must not be missed.
The staff were polite and helpful. The breakfast was good plenty of it. The bedclothes were crisp and clean.
Downstairs was excellent both the decor and the breakfast. Also the staff.
Hotel has been improved since our last visit.
Very friendly and helpful staff.
Staff were friendly and helpful.
Clean, able to take my dog.
everyone very obliging.
Location and service.
Laid back friendly.
Location.
The hotel was walking distance from the town centre, railway station and restaurants. The staff were polite and helpful.
Buxton is a good place to explore the Peak district from.
Very convenient location for Buxton Festival venues. Food reasonable. Staff friendly and helpful.
The location was ideal for the opera house which is why we booked.
There is a trade off with having a good size room and a small bathroom. In houses of character this is not always easy to achieve. So great room but small bathroom. We weren't there for the bathroom however. There are probably rooms with such which you could request. Like all these old houses you could throw a couple of hundred big ones at it and make it look ultra modern but what the hell, the place was clean, tidy, comfortable and warm. Plus a sound breakfast after a peaceful nights sleep.
darkness within room due to dull lighting made reading difficult eg to read tourist brochures easily; another side light was supplied, but intensity of light brightness did not improve.
Breakfast was ok, but some of the food was overcooked - hard poached eggs, hard bacon, not very nice sausage. These were minor issues but overall a very enjoyable stay.
The hotel was very dated and needed an update. The furniture in our room was very old. The dressing table was falling to pieces and rattled every time we walked, one of the drawers fell out everytime we tried to open it.
The shower needed updating. It wasnt hot enough or powerful enough.
All the little prepacked sugar, butter etc at breakfast, though cooked
breakfast had good choice. No lift and I was on 2nd floor.
Nothing was bad to be honest!.
Bathroom very small, but everything worked well.
Bedroom furniture was a bit tatty and the breakfast edible but overcooked. Tasted like it had been kept warm for a while.
Very easy to nit pik however I will not this is a pleasant hotel and some reviews are unfair.
Room 11 a bit tired and would benefit from some refurbishment.
Whilst my bedroom was clean, the decor was tired and a few pictures or other ornaments would have given the room a lift.
Bathroom could do with some updating ( no towel rails or hooks for hanging dressing gowns etc. Decor in bedroom a little tired. Alll minor problems which dindn't detract from comfotable visit.
nothing to dislike.
Had to climb 2 flight of stairs with our luggage. Twin room, paper coming off wall, and there were rips in the bedding.
the mattress was very hard.
Bathroom could do with an update.
N/A.
Hot water was a bit temperamental.
nothing.
No bath.
Traffic noise.
The low room prices reflect the fact that the hotel is in need of quite some refurbishment.
The single glazed window frame in my single room on the front of the hotel was in very poor repair and so the passing traffic woke me very early.
The Wfi requires a simple log in, not two sides of instructions.
The parking needs dedicated white lines.
The showers require updating and so does the décor.
Evening meals - 'meagre' - food OK, nothing special. Lounge/restaurant were 'chilly' - hot water/showers were a bit luke-warm.
The room was a bit small and the shower room was a bit cramped. Bed was a bit bumpy.
A very poor single room with broken bathroom fittings. As there was no chair, I had to sit on the bed which had a carved headboard I couldn`t rest on.On a hot night, with open window, traffic noise was very bad.
No dislikes.
Decor in the rooms needs updating. Lumpy mattress.
Water was at a trickle - shower was very dated and plumbing needs attention.
Red hot in rooms, but freezing in dining room/bar. Breakfast rushed.
room 11 needs attention - Paper hanging off bathroom ceiling.
Bit dated. Poor bathroom/shower.
Broadband didn,t work and hotel not particularly concerned.
No customer service, no late bar and tiny shower room.
First impressions of the hotel was poor and despite the age of the building it needed much TLC to bring it up to an acceptable standard. The en-suite bathroom was very small and the room needed painting and money spent on it. Breakfast was basic and there is only room for about 7 cars in the hotel car park.
Badly needs refurbishment. Not up to the standards of when I stayed there a decade ago.
The bed was uncomfortable as the mattress was old and creaked. The furniture was tired with some handles missing and no shelf in the bathroom to put anything on. The staff member didn't even ask how our stay was when we paid although I told him the mattress needs changing in room 9. Although he thanked me for pointing this out I suspect nothing will be done about it. Breakfast was fine. Cups were stained.
