We only had one afternoon to spend from 2.00 pm onwards so it was great that it was so close to the Nijo Castle, then we walked down Nishiki Market near Shijo Dori. There is a nice little ramen restaurant in the corner of the street opposite Nijo Castle which we liked as they even have English menu.

I don't like to offer reviews on Hotel Gimmond because I like it to
be a secret...centrally located, friendly staff, but you do have to be a
little experienced as a traveler as this hotel is a business hotel
ratcheted up a few notches. Nothing wrong with that considering the
price per night, but it is not filled with amenities. You cannot beat
its location if you want to walk around Kyoto.

We were looking for a typical and traditional Japanese ryokan, and we found it. Great experience! Rooms are big and comfortable. Even though they don't speak good English, staff is helpful and friendly. It's located in a cool and quiet little street, but very close to an animated block and subway stations. Free wi-fi. Good value for money.

on the Tatami. The a/c worked great and the showers were powerful.
This is a "big city" Ryokan so it is not like those in smaller

The Staff was super friendly and helpful. They know the city very well
and give hints how to move in the city. They also have maps and you can
buy tickets directly in the hostel that you don't have to be
bothered with it in the metro station or bus stop (very convenient). The
hostel is clean and quite during night. They have a huge common area
with kitchen, laundry and living room with tv. Additionally it is
located in the very city center. I recommend it for tourists and
backpackers! :)

added to the experience, each night when the staff had laid out the
futon there would be a folded origami (new one every day!) beside the

Wow! Staying at Nissho Besso was one of the best hotel experiences
ever!! This top-end traditional Japanese ryokan dishes out luxury and
service like you could never imagine. From the origami and personalised
notes on my mattress in the evenings, to the amazing breakfasts
(different every morning) and stunning service levels ....always
provided with a smile. This great property will be a key reason for
returning to Kyoto as soon as possible.
