The morning prayers were very interesting. There are two parts - chants at the prayer room, followed by the fire ritual at a shrine beside the temple. It can take more than an hour so it may not be appealing to those who are not interest or impatient. The temple is located near to Okunoin, so you can go for a walk there early in the morning or at night. The temple organises a night walk every month during what they call the Kobo Daishi day but I have no idea when that is - perhaps the full moon. alle beoordelingen »
Koyasan is absolutely beautiful, and definitely worth a trip out of the
hustle and bustle of Osaka. Eko-in was very good. A beautiful temple in
lovely surroundings and very peaceful. The staff were very friendly and
polite. I was a bit nervous about the shared bathroom, but it didn't
end up being too bad and I actually ended up having a wonderful relaxing
soak in the bath on my own. The other concern I had was about the food
as it is vegetarian buddhist cuisine and I'm not a fan of tofu! But
ag.
I loved the place, the experience was totally new to me and the staff
was friendly and helpful. Its a peaceful town with plenty of temples all
around not to mention the graveyard they got in their forest which is
big and beautiful at the same time (I realize that sounds weird when
talking about graveyard). The rooms are beautiful and Japanese
traditional like (similar to roykan)
It had a decent bathhouse and a lobby where you could use a computer if you don't have one, otherwise there is provid.
The temple is 2 minutes walking from the big cemetery, which is a plus especially at night, since they organize a guided tour - in English - of the cemetery. The room was very big and spacious, the temple clean and the staff helpful and friendly. Vegan dinner and breakfast were included and both were good and aboundant. The morning ceremonies with the monks were a nice addition. I overall enjoyed my stay at the temple and I'd recommend it to everybody, but please keep in mind that it is a templ.
All the staff spoke English very well and were very friendly and
helpful. We participated in the morning ceremonies and the script
writing in our room, which we were glad to experience. The location was
easily accessible by bus and not too far to walk to Okunoin. The food
was quite nice and made a change to the overpowering fishiness (not our
cup of tea) of other Japanese meals we tried. Loved the whole journey to
Koyasan from the train to the amazing cable car to the bus ride into the
village .
- fantastic location! Just 2 mins walk when getting off the bus stop.
- dinner set and breakfast was nice, & has tea, snacks provided for the room.
- very clean and comfortable.
- it's still interesting to join the meditation session at 4pm, then enjoying dinner and a hot bath after. Then walking in the area during the night was very peaceful and pleasant... You can get the modern brush pen and paper to copy the scripture anytime during the stay, the morning praying and fire ceremony is wor.
We had a great time at Eko-in. Staying in the temple was such a unique experience. To us, it was the highlight of our 2-week Japan trip. Eko-in is a very nice temple with very good facilities, very good food and very friendly monks with good english skills. We recommend doing the cemetery tour with one of their monks. The morning prayer and fire ceremony (which start at 6:30am) were a bit touristy for our taste. It's still nice to see, but late sleepers might just want to get that extra hour un.
Our time at Eko-in Temple was a highlight of our two weeks in Japan. The temple and its gardens are lovely. The room was well-sized, the futons very comfortable and the food was wonderful. The bathing facilities are large and clean and the onsen is wonderful after a cold day sightseeing on the mountain. We attended the morning prayers and fire ceremony, as well as the afternoon meditation. All of which was a great experience. We would highly recommend Eko-in.
The young monk serves us in the temple. They are friendly, and not like
the hotel staff, so it is good for the visitor who looks for simple life
style. The room is big and Japanese style. The temple is already a
heritage. The share toilet and bathroom is clean. The room has tv and
heater. We also join for the morning ceremony activity (optional) with
the monk. In short, it is good experience to have a night in the temple.
the temple complex is gorgeous, surrounded by nature, quiet and peaceful. excellent cuisine, and particularly elegant presentation.
The monks are friendly, speak good English and the meditation of very interesting afternoon.
you must remember that the temple complex is not a hotel, so you have to adapt to their customs.
shared facilities are very clean and brand new.
bring along warm clothing because Koyasan is plain.
Very interesting place. Exactly what you need to relax from the running and tension of the big cities. Rooms are very authentic traditional Japanese (sleeping on tatami and futons, very thin walls), there is a great Onsen in the Eko-in (free to use) and don't miss the trip to the main attraction in Koya, with superb explanations by the monks. Definately, enjoy the superb food (very unusual for foreighners).
- The temple itself: it's incredible!
- The tatami rooms (ask for a view on the garden: beautiful).
- The kindness and attention of the young staff.
- Its convenient location near the bus stop (#9 - Karukayado-mae stop, on the orange Daimon Okunoin-mae line) and near Okunoin cementery (3 minutes away walking).
- The peacefulness and quietness of the temple.
- The dinner in one's room (great vegetarian meal).
This place was way more than we usually spend, but if you want the total temple experience with true japanese monk/vege/traditional eating, the bath experience, buddhist service, fire ceremony and (extra) the night tour of the cemetery (total MUST); you can't fault it. Exemplary stye and service even though the food was a bit 'different' for the kids (great interesting experience all the same).
I really enjoyed my stay here! The property was beautiful. Just sitting by the pond or even in my room with the windows open, was so peaceful and relaxing. The ceremonies in the morning were great to take part of - esp the fire ceremony, which I dont think is available everywhere. The staff/monks were all very friendly and helpful. Great location to walk over to the cemetery.
We loved the place. Our room was big with a little balcony/porch
with access to the garden. We attended the meditation and morning
ceremonies. Unfortunately, the cemetery guided tour was canceled due to
rain. The food was delicious and more than enough :) I wish we would
have stayed a couple of more days in this peaceful place.
Staying in the temple was a beautiful experience - we had a great view of the manicured gardens from our room. The monks invite you to watch prayers, meditate and observe the fire ceremony, and all the meals are traditional vegan japanese buddhist cuisine. It really felt like an invitation into their lives.
The young monks running the place are very efficient, registration and check-in was done at the comfort of your room. Tea was immediately served. Activities such as scroll writing and morning meditation are available for guests. The best part of the whole experience was the food! It was amazing!.
This was a great way to stay and experience true Japanese culture. It was wonderful to experience the Bhuddist religious ceremonies and meals firsthand. Much more than accommodation, more an insight on to this lifestyle. The food was great as were the facilities including the bath.
Fantastic opportunity to experience Japan culture and traditions.
The temple is beautiful, ideally located in Koyasan, 1 minute from the bus stop.
Bedroom and bathroom were spotless.
Food really good, beautifully presented.
The monks speak good english and are very welcoming.
Very central. Right at the start of the Cedar Tree cemetery walk. Together with the meditation at 4.30pm and the 6.30am morning prayer and fire ceremony are the highlights and the experience we decided to journey up the mountain. Did not disappoint.
I really enjoyed staying in Koyasan at the Eko-in Temple because the monestary is located just a block away from a great entrance to the Okunoin cemetery and because the staff and facilities are really geared to take care of their guests.
Very kind staff and excellent service. Dinner and breakfast included an served nicely to your room. I will choose the same temple if i will have a chance to come again. Need to know that temple accommodation is specific.
Ekoin was a unique experience in a magical place!! The ceremonies were great to take part in, the forest walk to kobo daishi shrine was amazing and worth doing at dusk to add to the ambiance.
Great experience spending a night at the temple. Great rooms, really clean and everything works well. Delicious traditional food. Nice night tour in the cemetery provided by the monks.
top location - walking distance to all the important sights in Koya-san; great experience to stay in a buddhist temple and join the morning ceremonies; food was good; traditional rooms.
The location was excellent, as well as very helpful staff, especially
Nabu, who guided a night tour of Okunoin Cemetery. Unforgettable
experience! We would love to come back one day :).
The friendly, helpful staff and good food. The cosy kotatsu was also much appreciated (it was freezing in November). Well kept traditional rooms and nice garden view.
The location, the tourist options available, such as going to the largest graveyard in Japan. The meditation classes and the temple itself was beautiful.
The gorgeous place, the beautiful room, the tatami beds were the most comfortable among all our stay in Japan, the service provided by the monks.
The feeling of being steeped in centuries-old mysteries ... The place had a relaxed atmosphere too and was a taste of a very traditional Japan.
Great cemetery tour, meditation with English translation, morning prayers and fire ritual. Good value for your money. Such a great experience!.
+ overall experience
+ optional tour of cemetery (thanks Nobu-san!)
+ being able to learn about Shingon Buddhism in English
+ Meditation time.
Beautiful setting and bedrooms.
Meditation with a monk and fire ceremony in the morning..
Night visit of the cimetary.
Central location.
Priviliged exprience to live in a monastery for a day. The japanese
bath, the tatami, the monk-like experience.
The hot communal bath. The cleanliness, friendly and helpful staff. The surroundings and the unique setting.
The relaxed feeling, the monastery has a beautiful atmosphere and surroundings. Near the bus stop.
A delightful experience to stay at the temple. The service was very good and the meals excellent.
Friendly...knowledgable staff...loved our stay...wonderful, once in a lifetime experience!.
Nice location
Room with a nice garden view
Nice staff who speak English
Spacious room.
The cemetery night tour was wonderful and don't miss the fire ritual.
Very great experience! Very nice and helpful staff. Great night tour.
A very unusual holiday experience that should not be missed.
The night tour was fantastic - really great experience!.
Very traditional feel and very very beautiful place.
Exotic experience in a Buddhist monastery.
Helpful staff.
Great spot.
Lovely temple.
The view from my room, food and spa.
Excellent and unique experience!.
Nice staff and delicious food.
the big room
hot bath
food.
If you go during cold weather (I was there in November), it can get very cold, and the heater is not able to warm up the room sufficiently. In addition, the heater will ring after every 3 hours upon which if you do not press a button it will go off. Bearable for me.
The breakfast wasn't so great, considering how much it cost, still
pleasant to have experienced it, had no idea what I was eating however.
The cold walk to the shower at night (0 degrees), but after a soak in
the hot bath we weren't cold on the way back to our room.
- I wouldn't put it as a negative point, but don't expect too much in terms of privacy. The rooms have sliding door but no lock . But there is safety box for you to store stuff in.
- Little bit commercialized, it won't give you very original feeling coz basically I found its open for tourists.
- our room is very close to the road, so whenever there is a car passing by in the night, the light reflecting on the door.... Bit noisy and bright for sleeping.
We can't think of anything. We loved this place.
I got cold at night but it's my fault ....
- Shared bathrooms
- Quite expensive.
- The public bathrooms (even if there are quite a few scattered around the premises and are very clean). However, one can live one or two nights with a shared bathroom, and the place is definitely worth it!.
No internet in the room.
The women's toilets smelt strongly of stale urine. I'm not sure if this is because the monks didn't want to go in there because the unisex toilet facilities were clean.
As expected, the food (dinner and breakfast) were very basic vegetation dishes. But I did not come up the mountain for that. Warning for people with pillow problems. Here, the pillow consist of a sack of rice husks, I think. Have to put the pillow (rice sack) under the futon mattress to sleep on something soft. It worked!.
The only negative is that wifi only works in a limited lobby area (in other words in most cases you cannot use your wifi enabled computer while in your room, you have to sit in the little computer room near the entrance or near the entrance). Generally this is not a big negative as when staying at a monestary there are other things (than the internet) to do, but it would have been nice to be able to email late at night or early in the morning from my room.
very cold at night (paper-thin walls); quite overpriced.
To be honest...there is nothing I could possible think of :).
Nothing we didn't like!.
- make sure you ask at the station to get off at the right bus stop
- if you take a taxi back to the station be prepared to pay around Y2000 as the taxi cannot enter the bus only road with is shorter.
Dinner and breakfast included but very frugal, not enough food.
Public bath very small.
Staff does not speak English except one and he is not always there. Communication was a big issue.
Very very cold in the facilities. Althought a good heating devide was
provided for the room.
Vegetarian only menu.
Very cold, rooms heated with kerosene heaters but freezing everywhere else. Nothing that you could not expect, as you are in a Temple and not in a hotel.
Very expensive. But worth it.
not cheap.
