Most expensive accommodation we stayed in, but could not find any better - due to our late booking and its very central location a short walk from the station and a very short walk to the castle. Probably the best cost / value hotel that I have seen in Japan.

  Excellent location right next to the train station (as the name suggests). Good base for exploring charming Matsumoto. Staff are very friendly and generally have a good level of spoken English. Rooms are small but comfortable. Wifi signal was very strong in the rooms (enough to support Skype video calls). Good communal baths on the 7th floor. The location of this hotel near the train station, made it very convenient to get to from the Shinkansen. The hotel staff were very friendly and they helped us find four of the towns free bikes so that we were able to see Matsumoto castle before it closed. The lounge next to the bar was also really nice to hang out at and have a few drinks.
