The hotel, while an older building, had been recently renovated and what a pleasant surprise with all the character & artistic flair in the room (and even the hallway!) The "wow" factor was definitely there when we opened the door to the King suite. The room was a lovely size, the bathroom huge, with great tilework and an awesome shower. all reviews » I stayed here very recently for six nights while attending a conference downtown. Let me say it was totally worth the extra effort and cost in cabs to get downtown ( half hour by bus, 15 minutes 13 bucks by cab). The staff is friendly, courteous, and professional, from the cleaning staff, valet parking attendants, front desk folks and management. I get the feeling people love their jobs and want to deliver good service to the guests. The bar downstairs is awesome and deserves its own review. On. The room was like home. I liked how there was a regular blow-dryer and magnifying face mirror in the bathroom. (Comforts of home) these make you feel like no one assumes your going to steal something (lol). I loved the many tables and hooks to hang things. Suites are roomy and floor plan well thought out. I liked how the bathroom, closet and kitchen were all separate. Very nice. Huge sofa was cool. Great décor. We stayed at this hotel with our twin 2 yr olds and grandparents. We stayed in the two room suite w/living room, kitchen, dinning room. Wow. It was old, but charming. very roomy and good price. We are going to stayed there again soon. Don't expect the hilton or Marriot. But it is within walking of Balboa park. The patio room was amazing, the continental breakfast was good, the downstairs restaurant was very good, the rooftop views were nice, the room key came with a map of the area. When we checked in, they said "it was coming". It was a bit inconvenient to have to go downstairs to the lobby to access the wifi...although they do provide a really beautiful seating area. The elevator is quite slow. There is only one & it can get busy. prices are a bit high. No parking. If you are cold and it is the summer season. They have the old pipe system for heating. so bring jackets for those transitioning times of the year. No Pool. . No pool or outdoor seating/lounging area. The elevator was very old and slow so had to use the stairs. The elevator was slow. There was little or no insulation for sound proofing, and the noise from the room above was terrible. Bar and restaurant are very out dated. Breakfast is very bad, nothing fresh on offer and no service. Shame because location on top of the building is nice. Absolutely not in line with the quality and feel of the rooms and reception. Elevator can be slow. Restaurant did not have good gluten-free options -- they need to get with the rest. Of the world. Also no fresh fish the night I was there -- this, in San Diego?. The breakfast was not good :( Althoguh the dinner was great, the breakfast was poor and, less choiced. Hope it to be better in near future... Room did not get cleaned one day. Rather expensive for what it is. Wish we could have stayed longer. Get rid of the valet parking. It slows me down and costs me money. 1. No towel racks or hooks in the bathroom. 2. It was very noisy in our room; faced on parking lot and 5th street. Next time I'll request a Spruce Street side room. Could hear quite a lot of street noise and some noise from adjacent room. Paid meals were awful, window would not close - road noise, no bathtub for toddler, coffee filters don't fit coffee machine. Elevator was really slow. Slow elevator, meal at the upstairs restaurant. The only complaint I have is that you were sold out and could not stay longer. Booked room was not available for the first night. Valet parking questionable as parking is right by the building. noise from upstair neighbor could improve curtain for better light block. There was a problem with air conditioning that generated an annoying noise. Valet parking rules too rigid, but maybe they have a reason. I was overcharged for Hotel stay. Initially After showing letsbookhotel.com reservation they applied the internet rate at $140 per night. The room shakes (a lot), when people moved above and dragged luggage in the hallway. Beware there is a health warning on the stairs - stating certain substances used in the building can cause health issues (including cancer.!). We stayed in room115 the music from the bar was annoying, we complained they said it would quit at 9:30 to 10 at 11:30 pm I called front desk for earplugs, the music was still going.
