The charm of the place - an 18th century building with character. The staff were friendly and helpful and the breakfasts ample. Good location in town centre, convenient for bars and restaurants. Parking arrangements behind the hotel are also a plus. The quirkiness was charming. Being around 300 years old, there wasn't a level floor or wall in the place! The restaurant food was sublime and the staff could not have been more cheerful and helpful. If in the area I'd stay there again.

Loads of character and right on the main street so convenient for shopping and for visiting nearby attractions such as York and Thirsk. Large, warm, comfortable room with hair dryer and iron in cupboard. Full, cooked English breakfast in morning. Atmospheric 18th Century Coaching Inn on the Great North Road between York and Edinburgh. Good value for money. Wonderful location in centre of historic town. My room was overlooking the main street so I was able to watch everything going on below. Good choice of buffet breakfast. Great hotel to explore surrounding countryside. Beer in bar. The meal in the restaurant and good chilean wine. Breakfast haddock excellentbut unimpressive breakfast spread. Coffee came in teapot!. Friendly reception, good room, god bar, good breakfast. located in centre of town so good for all Pubs and Restaurants. The staff were really friendly and accommodating. My only moan would be the lack of a lift: it took two trips to get the suitcases from the car to the room on the top floor. A little too dated. A splash of paint would have brightened the rooms. I could only stay one night!. Weak wi-fi signal on 2nd floor in bedroom and on grounf floor. Impossible to pick up emails. They seemed to have trouble keeping up with the demand for the cooked breakfast. Nothing. Confusion by Manager over payment. When I checked in I was not asked for my card so assumed payment had been taken on card prior or on arrival. Only on check-out to be chased into the car-park demanding payment. Very embarrassing. Especially since I had checked on my way out nothing was outstanding. Had a poor dining experience this time due to the hotel being very busy, with a function taking up a great deal of attention. Room 15 abit cold. Towels too small. Duvet cheap quality. No wifi in the hotel, the service was hopeless! not great if you are trying to keep in touch with the outside world!. Noise from street. Mattress on bed could have been softer but this was a minor thing. N/A. nothing. Was not informed about salad with main meal, would have asked for veg. Cold tap did not have complete tap. Noise from banging doors inside hotel. Street noise. Vehicles heard driving past at 0445 in morning. Booked double room and got single beds. Changed room and got one on noisy front of hotel. Clean but tired decor. Bar closed at midnight even for the residents. Car park full. Toilet had a seat,but no lid. nothing. Noise from (kitchen?) ventilation. lot of stairs. Basically a comfortable property but the utilities in the bathrooms were poorly maintained. Constantly dripping taps. No lifts to upper floors although staff did deliver heavy suitcases to the room. Lamps in room were a bit temperamental until I switched the lightbulbs around and then they worked; also the lighting was wired strangely. Overhead and one lamp worked together; the bedside lamps worked together but I couldn't have the main light off and all three lamps on. Slow dinner service. noise from the market setting up at 5am. nothing. no meals on Sunday evening. Dimly lit breakfast area and the breakfast itself; buffet style, with food items allowed to remain so long in warming tray's as to become overcooked. Nice fresh toast though!!. Very noisy in the weekend. Disco on-site playing until gone 2 am. Nice view of a brick wall and workmen decorating outside our window. Uncomfortable bed , noise from function room till late at night. Hotel decor very tired. Room and bathroom decor very tired . Will unlikely return or recommend to others. Room small bed too small noisy we should have been warned about the market setting up 5am under our window.
