Once owned by children's author Beatrix Potter, this country house hotel is set in beautiful large gardens, just a 5-minute walk from the banks of Lake Windermere. Locally sourced produce is served on the seasonal English menu in the 2 AA rosette awarded Lindeth Howe Restaurant. Homemade cakes and scones are also served in the Lindeth Howe Restaurant with fresh tea or coffee. Overlooking the lawns, the hilltop lounge has garden doors that lead onto the terrace. There was a very nice Atmosphere, Nice rooms to just go sit and relax away from your room, Very good service, all staff were friendly and helpful, They went out of their way to help you in every way they could, The Room was very nice and both Me and my Girlfriend commentedon the comfort of the beds and nice washing facilities. Everywhere within the hotel was spotless. Having stayed in this hotel before, this time we decided to treat members of our family to a stay there. There was only one [price] menu choice for dinner which, I found rather expensive ie the cost of dinner cost almost as much as our one night BandB accomodation, however,I have to say that the meal was beautifully cooked and presented. There was a faint odour of stale urine in the room -poss coming from en-suite(which was v clean though).Pool is very small. Cannot really watch TV from bed, wall mounted would be better. Everything on the menu has too many different combination sauces. No chicken dishes. We ate out instead. No a la carte option for dinner. Sometimes may want 1 or 2 courses at lower price. Otherwise food and service excellent. Room a little small for the money,bath mat black with mold,taxi firmbowness given in hotel handbook arrived over an hour late which ratherspoiled our evening!. Breakfast had a little to be desired, it was all good it was just bland. menu very good but maybe other choices rather than the set menu. Lack of high chairs in the Dining Room. Music in the dining room (same tracks every meal-time).The reception staff seemed to look down on me and my wife, as if we weren't good enough for the hotel. During our stay the hotel was being painted on the outside. The scaffolding covered the windows, obscuring the view which we actually paid more for. We were advised by staff that booking.com should have mentioned this.The food was delicious but a little rushed and pricey. Bed was soft and on examination appeared to be 'past its sell by date'. I would have prefered a reception desk.

Please note guests must specify the ages of children. Children under 7 years of age are not allowed in the dining room for dinner, however private dining is available if requested on booking. Bowness is one of the few villages situated on the edge of the lake. The hotel specialises in sightseeing tours, golf, fishing, walking and mountain bike hire. However, the glacial landscape offers many more activities, all of which we can help arrange.

Travelling information

By Car:
From the South and the East:
- From the M6, junction 36, take the A591 towards Windermere.
- At the large roundabout, take 1st left onto the B5284, signposted Hawkshead via Ferry and Crook.
- Continue along this road for approximately 11 km (7 miles) until reaching the staggered crossroads with the A5074.
- Go straight across (left and then sharp right) onto Longtail Hill. Lindeth Howe is the 1st turning on the left.

From Scotland and the North East:
There are 2 possible routes. Firstly:
- From the M6, junction 40, take the A66 towards Keswick.
- On a cloudless day, take the A592 via Ullswater and Kirkstone Pass (views are breathtaking) to Windermere (see below for final directions).

Alternatively:
- On a cloudy day continue along the A66 to Threlkeld.
- Turn left through St Johns-in-the-Vale to Windermere on the A591, via Grasmere & Ambleside (see below for final directions).

From either route:
- At the junction of the A591 and A592 head south to Bowness Bay on the A592.
- Continue south out of Bowness on the A592 towards Newby Bridge and Barrow.
- After less than 1.6 km (one mile) there is a left fork onto the B5284 - Longtail Hill, signposted Kendal.
- Lindeth Howe is the last turning on the right, 300 metres up the hill.

By Bus or Train:
The closest rail station and national express coach stop is Windermere, where there will be an abundance of taxis to bring you to Lindeth Howe (about a 5 minute drive).
