Magic. One of those experiences that should be on a "at least once in your lifetime" list. The atmosphere and the comfort that has been created while maintaining the rough patina of caves is amazing - to the last detail. We regretted that we had only booked one night. The staff helped us to make the most out of the short stay. Within one hour we had a dinner reservation in a great restaurant, a private guided tour the next morning, followed by a massage in the room, before checking out. The loc.

The location, in Matera amongst the 'sassi', was spell binding and the luxurious accommodation blended with the location very well. I would describe the accommodation as rustic embellished with luxurious touches - from the designer bath to the amazing breakfast! It says a lot that when we arrived and saw the place we immediately wanted to extend our stay! A big thank you to the helpful, interested staff. The total experience was amazing. From the moment we arrived we felt that this was something very special. The staff were extremely helpful & the whole philosphopy behind this facility was refeshing by being true to cultural preservation wherever possible. The staff arranged for us to spend time with a local guide (Angela) who kindly told us the story of the Sassi which enriched the experience even more. Thank you to the staff for making this a memorable time. This is an experience you'll never forget, staying and sleeping in a cave room with romantic candle light like being set bCk somewhere in the Middle Ages, but at the same time with all the modern conveniences you can think off. Breakfast was absolutely fabulous; Matera itself and this hotel are something you don't want to miss; well worth the costs of staying here. Don't forget to bring slippers when walking on the rough stones of your room at night. This hotel provides a unique experience staying in rooms which have been converted from the 'sassi' (caves) which have provided accommodation in Matera for centuries. The staff werre amongst the best we experienced in Italy - helpful and friendly. The location of the hotel - overlooking La Gravina ravine is spectacular. Having a candle-lit bath in a cave was one of the best memories of my holiday. We were welcomed by lovely staff who gave us a briefing on the project and the history. Utterly speechless when we were introduced to our suite No 13. Huge with separate bedroom area, living area, en-suite and room with the bath and a fireplace and our own balcony with the most fabulous view over the valley. A complimentary bottle of delightful wine and a bowl of fruit was very much appreciated. This is a spectacular setting with luxurious accommodations set in a cave. There are a number of stairs to climb and the floors in rooms are uneven due to their authenticity, but staying in this space is worth the effort. Lighting is minimal and supplemented by numerous candles which adds to the aura in the room. Breakfast is sumptious with a wide array of choices. Very special, a stay in a "grotta" i would recommend it to everyone. It looks really beautiful, burning candles on arriving. However you should realise that.the bathing facilities are also in the "grotta", so you shouldn't be too shy. We loved everything in our stay! It is amazing that we were living in a cave and having everything we should have at the same time! We think that "Sextantio Le Grotte Della Civita" was the best place to stay in Matera! While appearing completely authentic the caves were equipped with all comforts (floor heating, modern bath room, indirect lighting). Truly a place you will never forget. What a beautiful city accommodation was sensitive to its heritage and beautifully done. Staff friendly and very knowledgable . Lots of steps to the cave so pack lightly, ample parking close by. I really can't think of anything. I'm afaird it was really difficult to find, even with the use of a GPS. Nothing I can think of!. Nothing - but it would have been nice to get a drink at the hotel. Only breakfasts are provided. Very difficult to fault the whole experience, the only very minor thing was my Husband would have liked a shower although I enjoyed the experience of the pebble bath and the jug of water and secondly the breakfast lacked bread / toast, jam etc.Two minor points. Electricity might be turned off during the night, so electronic devices may not be charging when you think they are. Pack a small flashlight to deal with the floors if there is no power. There isn't much privacy for the toilet area. Nothing!. Staff could be a bit more helpful with recommendations (restaurants, places to visit, etc.), breakfast did not completely live up to our expectations (super busy, almost not enough food). Nothing!. Should have packed a day bag for stay - easier to transport to the hotel. best room, but no shower...only a minor fault. Cost. Can be confusing as WC in the room is not separated by a door and sounds can spread around. Would not like to stay for more than two nights as Matera is can be seen in a day and there is not much else to do locally.
