Chateau de Portail was a wonderful experience and Claude Herbert was an amazing host. It was nice to be welcomed so warmly into his home with nowhere out of bounds. The house is charming, warm, comfortable and elegant with a relaxed feel to it thanks to Claude Herbert's hospitality. As a family with two young girls (aged 3 and 5) this can sometimes be an annoyance to other guests and the host but we never felt like this. Beautiful property and grounds. Fantastic pool, if a little chilly and the pool area is so relaxing with lots of sun loungers, tables and chairs and lovely pool bar. A the end of a long journey being met by Christophe and ushered to the lovely swimming pool to cool off was wonderful. The chateau was beautiful in large gardens which were child friendly and boisterous boys were not curtailed in noisy and extensive games of hide and seek. We were only booked in overnight on our way to Calais from Carcassonne. We arrived after a 7 hour drive so a dip in the outdoor heated pool was a welcome and rejuvenating experience. The house is very romantic and charming and set in its own grounds so it is perfectly child friendly. Our hosts were extremely friendly and spoke perfect English. This hotel is located on the river, right across from the old city center. It's a 5-minute walk to everything. The place is a normal, clean 3-star French hotel. The staff were very pleasant, and their suggestions of things to see guided us to some out-of-the-ordinary events. - Friendly staff and private parking

We liked the very warm welcome. Emily went over and above to make us feel welcome. My kids had a special request: to borrow some crayons, and yes Emily found some for them to use. We even got to taste the family wine. Indoors, everything is tastefully decorated; outdoors, it is tranquility among the vines. Could not have been better!

Beautiful hotel and family rooms well designed and carefully thought out. The childrens bunk beds were in a separate area, behind a closed door, but within our room, brilliant! Large comfortable beds, lovely warm showers, good sized pool, fabulous buffet evening meal and breakfast. Great location for the wonderful beaval zoo.

Amazing place to stay. Located on the river bank. Greeted on arrival by the owner which the chateau has been in his family for a very long time if not original owners. The location is ideal for visiting the Chateau at Chambord. This is a really unique experience and an opportunity to stay in a Chateau. The rooms are of an older period but quite charming. The hosts Patrick and his wife Ileana were both friendly and helpful with local information. The breakfast in a period dining room with painted panels was special.

We had a wonderful experience staying at the auberge de l'ecole. David and Agnes made us so welcome, and the food was superb. Our room was delightful, two double beds so comfortable, the decor pale blue achieved a very relaxing place to be. Nothing was too much trouble from the owners and staff, we stayed 3 nights and could have easily settled for another 3. Dinner was really good - food, service and wine.
It's dog friendly (at €15 ea!) and if you have animals with you the best bet is to book the rooms by the pool, with access directly into the grounds. -

The hotel is located in a spacious park and the entire setting is very impressive and of high quality. The hotel owner had been very friendly and supportive in all aspects. Everything was absolutely great! The personnel, the service, the room, the park, everything was more than we have expected. Silence and pleasant atmosphere, easy access to castles and nice restaurants with absolutely gorgeous food. Best Croissants (at breakfast) I ever had in France!
