Set high on the side of the Hope Valley, most rooms at the Sir William have panoramic views over the village and across the valley.

The Sir William has 7 individual bedrooms that offer many of the facilities of a full service hotel, but in relaxed and informal surroundings. The traditional inn is ideal for a short break, romantic weekend or even an activity holiday.

The hotel has been recently refurbished and is home to the Terrace Garden Restaurant, which serves classic English food.

The Hotel was situated in a lovely area of the Peak District. The Owners John and Michelle were very friendly and gave us an insight into the local area and suggestions for visiting places and eating out. The Barman Adrian was also very friendly. The Room was very nice and had a breathtaking view outside. Despite being a pub as well it did not impact on our stay ie. noise levels were minimal.

The hotel location was great for our purposes and the setting was gorgeous. Although the hotel restaurant was not scheduled to be opening on the Sunday evening it was opened because the hotel was fully booked. We had a wonderful meal from a varied menu and at a very reasonable price. Taking breakfast in the restaurant overlooking the wooded valley on a sunny Autumn morning was delightful. We were amazed when we arrived to find this little gem. For the price we were a little worried it could be dyre, but what a find! The rooms were massive, clean and really really comfortable! The facilities were good with a cracking little restaurant and bar! All in all a brilliant find, would definately recommend this!!!. Food and view. The Sir William had a very friendly atmosphere and the manager/owner was very accomodating, although the other front of house staff seemed a little disorganised and gave the impression that they didn't really know what was going on - especially at check in. Unfortunately when we stayed they were revevating so there was no Bar, Carpets or wall papaer - and was populated by workmen painting and fitting.The Manager's put themselves out to accomodate a late return. Although deposit had been paid we were left to go another hotel - not ideal after a days walking and wanting to eat. Staff was friendly and helpful. Good food, friendly staff. The hotel had a large parking lot and there was no problem to park close to the hotel. The food and the service were good.The view, but that was only from the bar, not the room which overlookeda busy room. We asked for a room with a view over the valley, which wasthe reason for booking this hotel. Our room was clean and comfortable but the shower was very poor and there was no mirror by the hairdryer so I had difficulty drying my hair. The breakfast was good and the view excellent, however this was somewhat spoilt by the vacuming taking place downstairs. My only minor criticism would be that the guest room we had is probably due for a cosmetic makeover. ONly down side were that the staff were sometimes hard to find, very helpfull when they were around, but sometimes the bar was left unattended and couldn't find anyone. The reception wasn't really a reception area with us having to go the bar when we arrived to get service. The shower worked okay but water did not come out effectively. Our room was very clean, however the the facilities were looking abit tired, however I understand that the new owners have only just taken up residence and hope to revamp it.The heating was on all night with hot water coming out of both basin taps?! The choice of CD's over breakfast was abit odd with Cheeky Girls a particular favourite...but amusing! Maybe the evening menu could have more choice. At the time, hotel undergoing redecoration (not indicated on website)but did not disrupt our stay too much, however I did not think it wasappropriate work should be carried out in evening when meals were beingserved, as this allowed smell of paint etc to drift into the lounge. Butstress this was only a temporary issue, I am sure hotel will be greatwhen decorating done.Bedroom was slightly dusty and cobwebs on ceiling. They were carrying out renovations whilst we were there (this did disturb us at all) but I would say that once these are done and the rooms are updated that the hotel will be fantastic (decor currently is a little tired). undergoing renovation work .but in all honesty did not interfere with our itinery. we booked 2 double rooms (4 adults) and there were only 2 bath towels available. Two people had to use x3 hand towels per person as bath towels. Short restaurant hours. The bathroom in the room was clean, but poorly finished and this gave a detracted from the quality of the common areas. This would, however, not prevent me from returning to the Sir William.The hotel itself and the staff was lovely. Unfortunately when we stayed they were revevating so there was no Bar, Carpets or wall papaer - and was populated by workmen painting and fitting. There was no place to hang cloths in our room, no bath mat and only one hand towel and one bath towel for two people.Slow to clean the room. public rooms all very tired ,carpets all worn. the room was in need of decoration and a furniture upgrade. Decorating quite tired looking, bed slightly uncomfortable. The room was a bit basic.Not even a wardrobe! Also there were 2 dishes off the menu . the public rooms were cold. Staff were unable to contact the owner so we were left in reception whilst they tried to sort out another hotel. Eventually refunded deposit a week after mistake and after an email and a phone call. No apology received. Tired furniture, poor facilites not matching those advertised. Needs a re-furb, which is apparently about to happen. Had expected choice of eating in bar or restaurant, but only bar open. The room was only fair to middling. The closet did not have rail to hang clothes on and there were no hangers in it. The closet only had hooks. The draw string on the curtain did not twork. Worst of all, there was absolutely no water pressure in the shower when we tried to take shows at 8:00 a.m.you should look for another place to stay. There was no flexibility on check in times and we had a curfew imposedof 12.30 am. The hotel was closing for a refurb the day after we stayed.There was no lock on the toilet door and no hand washing and dryingequipment. The room we had was large but had no blind or light curtainso you had to close the heavy curtain to change otherwise you were opento the countryside for viewing.Apoart from Isobel who was lovely, the staff were indifferent and theman who cooked breakfast was positively rude to me when a table was notlaid for us at bnreakfast on the first day. Hotel rooms dirty, no towels, bugs crawling on bathroom floor and no staff around to help!.
