I immediately liked the ambiance on entering the hotel and meeting the charming and helpful receptionist who occupies a chair in the 'sitting room' rather than standing behind a desk. I was presented with a personalised letter of greeting which contained all the information on hotel facilities that I could need. My case was carried for me to my room on the second floor, 21 named Two Spire.

My room was spotless and very well equipped with a comfortable double bed, a large wall mounted TV, alarm clock with Apple docking station, safe, mini bar fridge with complimentary non alcoholic drinks and fresh milk for the tea and coffee tray. The bathroom was also spotless and well equipped with a double sized shower enclosure with massive monsoon shower hea. Everything! The staff are great, the room is lovely (and warm - important in the middle of winter), the rain shower is amazing, the location excellent. I appreciated the little luxuries - the free snacks in my room (including fresh milk), the free glass of wine with my evening meal (which was absolutely delicious), the newspapers at breakfast (the Full Oxford Breakfast was also superb - very nice range, and the option of having breakfast in one's room was available). The welcome letter and late. We stayed in the Vicarage Suite (room 7), which was beautifully decorated and furnished. The four-poster bed was huge and amazingly comfortable, and the bathroom was spotless and wonderfully equipped. We were given a key to access the suite through a private entrance, which made us feel a bit special, and we had breakfast brought to our room for a nominal charge. Breakfast itself was good, hearty fare but nothing special. Eating out on the terrace in the sun was great, and we loved the swingin. We stayed at this hotel for a night and the location was perfect! We were just visiting Oxford for a day and we could have quite easily stayed in our room for a week! Firstly, on arrival the staff were very helpful and professional, they showed us to our room and it was just gorgeous! We stayed in room 24 (St Michaels Room) and it was exactly as pictured on the website. It was comfortable and quiet and had everything we needed. Breakfast in the morning was fantastic also! We would definitely st. We stayed there twice and got two very different rooms at the same price. Having been converted from a historical building, I suppose that all the rooms are of various sizes, some bigger than others. Very ncie interior decor, very well thought out. The shower was splendid. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, also happy to give us anything we want at any time. Very good location - there aren't many hotels in central Oxford, and this one is a welcome addition. The location of the hotel was superb for exploring central Oxford. Both the inside and outside of the hotel were spotless and our superior double room was decorated and maintained to a very high standard. Breakfast was included in the tariff (with a charge of £5 to have it delivered to our room) and the generous portions were of excellent quality. We would highly recommend the Vanbrugh House Hotel and wish we had booked to stay longer. The staff was not only friendly, they went out of their way to make you feel at home. They were also very helpful about where to go and what to see. The breakfast was fantastic. Much better that what we thought it would be! The room was new, clean and bright. Everything has been redone and we loved it. We were in the 'classic mini' room, which is the smallest and it still was comfortable and cozy. The rooms were big and beautiful. We had the best suite in the hotel and the bathroom was almost bigger than the bedroom. Added an extra night to our stay before we arrived and the staff was very accommodating. We even had a complimentary bottle of champagne for our anniversary. The breakfast was delicious as well as a dinner we had. It is also so close to the part of Oxford where all the shops are. We went for a one night stay to see the ballet. We stayed in a standard double room which we found to be very comfortable and beautifully appointed. It was the little touches which really made this hotel special; friendly, helpful staff, real milk for your tea, mini bar with complimentary soft drinks and nibbles, free Sunday newspaper, dressing gowns and an absolutely amazing rainfall shower. The Staff were great. Very interested in you and couldn't do enough to ensure a pleasant stay. I asked for sheets instead of the duvets, and they were removed and the beds remade immediately. At breakfast, the waitress remembered how I liked my tea, without my having to ask for it on subsequent mornings. The room was spacious, the beds comfortable and the little fridge in the room a nice touch. We stayed in the Vicarage Suite and if you're looking for the wow factor then this is the room for you. The bedroom has a giant four poster bed, there is a private terrace and the giant bathroom has twin tubs, flat screen tv and rainfall walk in shower. Its not cheap, but I booked for my wife's birthday and she hasn't stopped telling people about it since. Job done. Extremely curteous and helpful staff, especially the people at reception desk . To sum up: COMFORTABLE HOTEL, PROFESSIONAL YET PERSONAL INTERACTION, EXTREMELY TASTEFUL INTERIORS. The room was well decorated, well appointed and clean. Everything looked newly refurbished. The complimentary items in the mini bar were a nice touch. The breakfast was really nice, though the cheese, offered as part of the continental breakfast, looked like it had been waiting a while. I used to live in Oxford and wanted something close to the city centre. I found Vanbrugh House to be perfect. The staff were very helpful, our room wax beautiful and the location excellent. He and his partner loved the afternoon tea "just the ticket!" and said the room was "gorgeous" with a really comfortable bed. Perfect location and much better value than comparable top Oxford hotels. Decor fantastic, very comfortable rooms with everything you need. Faultless. I liked everything about this hotel but would issue one word of caution. The hotel has no lifts, (elevators), so if you have a problem climbing stairs it would be well to mention this when booking. The hotel does have a limited number of rooms on the ground floor. Nothing really. However, if you have difficulties with stairs try to book a room on the ground floor as there is no lift (elevator). My personal gripe is that I do prefer a top sheet, not just a quilt (the bed was also a bit too firm for me), but I still slept really well. Just a couple of things: the 'complimentary minibar' would've been a nice touch in a B&B or a smallish hotel, but in one trying to pass off a bit of prestige it felt a bit odd (a couple of cokes and a kitkat, and some milk for tea). The terrace/garden was actually overlooked by several of the other rooms and the adjacent buildings, so it was a little strange having twitching curtains on all sides!. Could do with employing more male staff - I felt really bad to have the girls from the reception to help us with the luggage. The girl at breakfast did not seem to be very happy with her job. The only thing that was lacking at Vanbrugh House was a proper reception area. The lounge doubled up as the reception, but there was no desk. This left the staff trying to deal with arrivals and departures with a laptop balanced on a small round table. This meant that arrival and departure was rather messy, although this was absolutely not due to the staff. This was the only thing that let the hotel down, but would not put us off staying again. Just a PR idea. If there are upgrades available, moving clients to a larger room, at no extra cost would be a great way to ensure people coming back. Not a thing. I would recommend this hotel to all my friends who are visiting Oxford. More mushrooms and tomatoes on the 'Oxford' breakfast would have made it perfect!. Our room was at the top of the hotel and we were unable to open the windows, so it was baking hot in the heatwave. An extra fan didn't really help. Maybe having some portable air con units might be an idea, as it isn't possible to have it installed. Nothing at all. Loved the stay. The only parking nearby was very expensive, £32 for 24hrs, which we weren't expecting. The first room offered to us was very small and should not have been sold as a double room. The communal areas are very small and feel cramped. Parking was not available so we had to look for paid parking which was not very convenient as you need to pre-pay and then come back and pay more if needed. Also it was not very clear how to drive to the hotel so we occasioanlly broke the traffic rules :/. There is no elevator, but the staff will carry luggage to and from the rooms. No negative comments .. This hotel is a jewel in Oxford. not much of a view from my window, but that`s nitpicking!. Choice of music at breakfast!. The whole place felt luxurious apart from the duvet, but that is a personal preference. Reception in lounge - impractical with more than one party with luggage in it at the same time; Room 6: wardrobe - no hanging depth for dresses, and difficulty using hairdryer (as a right-handed person) due to the position of the socket and the shortness of the flex; tables too close together in dining-room to move easily in-between them; car- parking charges. It was a shame that when we checked into Room 11 that it smelt incredibly strongly of chip fat. The window opens onto extractor fans from next door restaurants, and unless you have the window closed, the smell is very unpleasant. Makes clothes etc smell of chip fat. They did however move us to a beautiful room on the top floor which was appreciated, but I would have been very disappointed if we couldn't have been moved. Nothing, but parking could have been a major issue if my wife had not been a Blue Badge holder. Room was a little warm and some muted street noise during the night. Nothing. Small area for improvement would be breakfast, some homemade muesli/granola with yogurt and large bowl fresh fruit salad would compliment the excellent cooked options. Nothing. nothing LOL. No complaints whatsoever!. The only negative is that the room I was in was well appointed but not that big, so it didn't have anywhere to handle my suitcase, if it had been smaller it could have gone under the bed. However minor negative, this is a seriously well located hotel. Nothing we didn't like!. stairs down to breakfast room were rather steep. Nothing that we can remember!. Nothing. I could say no parking is an issue but if I paid for two days parking at a city centre parking, my stay would still have cost less than at the hotel on the high street!. Breakfast was disjointed - crowded dining room and very small breakfast portions. The staff is very friendly and courteous, but some are not trained , rather insecure and sometimes impractical (1 hour wait ! ) in serving breakfast. If we had to offer an issue that bothered us, it seemed to be HOT everywhere we went in the hotel. It may have been spoilt American expectations or just the fact that the weather was transitioning fm Winter. Only staying one night!. Charged for newspapers which I didn't know until I checked out. Most hotels give you free papers. I can imagine that the stairs down to the dining room might cause some people with mobility problems an issue. However, we coped fine!. While the stairs were a problem the staff were accommodating in assisting to move the luggage. Nothing!. There was not a thing that I didn't like. Drawing room and bar/restaurant areas somewhat small. Parking nearby cost £25 for 24 hrs. Not impressed with this as we had just been to London and spent that for 3 days at the hotel. Maybe the hotel could have a deal with a car park to make it cheaper.
