5 star it is not but if you are looking for old world French, which we were, it is excellent. The hotel was located in the middle of our transportation needs and we found the getting around from there was very easy. The food,wine and cheese was very good. if I return to Caen this will be where I will stay. I found the hotel a nice place to stay . The staff were very polite and helpful, and the location was excellent for catching onward transport to visit the sites as you have the train station,tram, taxi and the bus stop all on your door step. I would certainly use this hotel again.

Rooms & facilities exceptionally clean; great shower, hot water, newly renovated. Location, convenience & price outweigh size of rooms. Location, friendliness of staff, cleanliness, food - all were excellent. In addition city center is easily reached on the tram, and railway is close to hotel. Across the street was the Caen train station. I can not think of anything that I didn't like about La Consigne. Size of room was bit small. Nothing to dislike. No car parking, but found street parking after 7P. Not a huge selection of restaurants to stroll to. Would have been nice to have had a small fridge. I have done a lot of travelling this summer in cheap hotels. I do not understand why they do not put a small (very cheap) fan in each room to cool it down a little. This room did get a little warm in the evening and opening the window was a problem because of noise outside. A small fan costing 10 euro would have been sufficient. Aside from that, no complaints. A good budget hotel. Your on your own when the cafe downstairs closes at night, no one on duty for any assistance if you needed it. If you open the window, there is street noise. Not a problem for me but be prepared should you require absolute quiet. The litter and second hand smoke from smokers is pretty bad outside, not the hotel's fault. Surrounding area not so good. The room was smaller than most of the other European hotels. The double bed was a little uncomfortable. There was quite a bit of noise, mainly a woman yelling and baby crying outside our window but it settled down by midnight. We had to keep the window open as the room was too warm. Caen is a very small town with not a lot of sights to see.
