The private hot both and the ryokan beds. Our girls love them. Breakfast was yummy. The staff were very flexible. They exchange certain dishes which some of us don't eat. The food for dinner. Was expecting hot soup due to cold weather. Quality of food is good, so is presentation. It is just the type of food being served. Everything. We were offered a room along the train tracks, incredibly noisy. When I complained, they yelled at me. After a while, am Nd because I speak Japanese, we moved to a ridiculously tiny room with an ailing A/C machine, although we realized the next day they had empty regularly sized rooms available. Most surprising in Japan, we got no excuse. Hotel definitely to be black-listed, given the array of alternatives in Hakone.
